Euro 2012 – Toughest Test in Football Looms

What is widely regarded as the most difficult football tournament to win worldwide kicks off June 8th. Poland and Ukraine will host the 14th version of the European Championship and as per usual it features 16 of the top teams in Europe.

Here is a look at the teams and their chances to hoist the trophy on July 1st.

Spain
Odds to win 5/2

The defending champion in this event, Spain is predictably top favorite again. This team is absolutely stacked from top to bottom with one of the most potent offenses on the planet. Striker David Villa has been ruled out of the tournament which is a minor blow to the squad but there is no doubt that someone else will fill in admirably.

With all the accolades aside, there are some glaring trends that make you think twice about betting on Spain. They are an aging squad, no team has ever won Euro twice in a row and this team recently lost to England and drew with Costa Rica in tune-ups for the big tournament.

Spain may be experienced and they may be talented but at 5/2 there is too much going against them at the moment to be secure in your wager.

Germany
Odds to win 4/1

Germany finished second in Euro in 2008 and they appear to have a better, more potent fast-paced squad this time around. They absolutely demolished all of their opposition in friendlies ahead of this tournament. They are big, fast and technically sound with no glaring weakness except for their propensity to come up short on the biggest stages.

Mesut Ozil, Schweinsteiger and Klose are all top names in international football that are lacking one thing – a win in a major tournament. They will have to get by the Netherlands, England and France but this squad has what it takes from the goaltending to the attacking forwards.

At 4/1 Germany is a far more attractive option than Spain in my eyes!

Netherlands
Odds to win 17/2

The Dutch are once again the intriguing sleeper of this tournament and are coming off a runner-up finish in the World Cup – certainly a confidence booster! Sneijder, Robben, Van der Vaart and Robin van Persie make up one of the more potent lineups for sure – the back line appears to be the only slight issue with this squad.

The Netherlands looked terrific in qualifying and could realistically go deep in this tournament and could win it all with a little luck. The team has proven they can score goals – at 17/2 they may be worth a small wager!

England
Odds to win 11/1

There is little doubt about the talent on this English squad. But with the talent comes the realization that dysfunction is as big a part of this team as talent is. With discipline and a serious lack of team chemistry, England is a sketchy bet at best. Also factor in Wayne Rooney’s suspension for the first two group games of the tournament!

England scares me – how about you?

France
Odds to win 13/1

France has the most to prove after a disastrous World Cup. But they do have the talent and if they can overcome the ghosts of 2010 they could go as far as the semis this year and possibly beyond if they can put it all together.

Looking for a value bet? France may be your team.

Italy
Odds to win 15/1

This team only allowed two goals during qualification! They will be looking to bounce back from a brutal World Cup and they may have the players to do just that. Italy has a relatively easy Group and will advance to the playoff round with ease. Once there, anything can happen.

Portugal
Odds to win 21/1

Portugal needed a playoff just to qualify in this tournament. While they have proven that they can score and while they have some guy named Ronaldo, their inability to defend should be their undoing. But with talent up and down the lineup, Portugal may shock a few and go deep into the tournament.

Russia
Odds to win 21/1

An aging squad with a relatively easy Group – a trip to the quarters is likely but that’s about it.

Croatia
Odds to win 41/1

Modric is a nice player but he can’t do it all!

Ukraine
Odds to win 41/1

Is one of the host countries – advantage right???? Wrong – they have the misfortune of being one of the teams in the Group of Death!

Czech Republic
Odds to win 51/1

They could advance past the Group stage and they do have the best keeper on the planet but the Czech Republic appears outclassed in this tournament.

Poland
Odds to win 50/1

Another of the host countries has drawn the easiest Group – they could advance past the Group stage and that’s about it! [ad-3678122]

Greece
Odds to win 67/1

Won it all in 2004 but they will have either Germany or Holland in their way this year!

Republic of Ireland
Odds to win 67/1

Certainly outclassed in this tournament.

Sweden
Odds to win 81/1

They could get out of their Group with wins over France and/or England but Zlatan Ibrahimovic will have to be a standout!

Denmark
Odds to win 81/1

No chance in this tourney!
