LAST WEEK: Our pick for the Barclays, Charles Howell III, didn’t embarrass himself by any means, breaking 70 every round and finishing 18th. But it turned out that Dustin Johnson’s putter didn’t hold him back after all and he wound up with a long overdue victory.

How low can you go? That will be the question as the FedEx Cup playoff field narrows to 100 for the Deutsche Bank Championship this week.

The host track, TPC Boston, rated as the third-easiest par-71 on Tour last season. Add in possible leftover wetness from Hurricane Irene and we could have a dart-throwing contest on our hands this week.

Date: Sept. 2 – 5
Event: Deutsche Bank Championship
Course: TPC Boston, Norton, Massachusetts
Purse: $8,000,000
Defending Champ: Charlie Hoffman
FEDEX Cup Pts: 2,500

THE ELITE

Luke Donald
Deutsche Bank Championship odds: +1200

Donald was a respectable 18th at the Barclays and his well-rounded game gives him a great chance to score well this week. At the 2010 Deutsche Bank, he ranked second in birdies, third in greens hit and seventh in putting en route to a runner-up finish.

The Deutsche Bank Championship Predictions

Steve Stricker
Deutsche Bank Championship odds: +1200

With his soft touch and Tour-leading putter, it’s no surprise that Steve Stricker has always fared well at the Deutsche Bank. He won the tourney in 2009 and has finished 13th or better five straight times at TPC Boston.

THE CONTENDERS

Jason Day
Deutsche Bank Championship odds: +2000

Will Day finish what he started last year? At the 2010 Deutsche Bank, he led after 54 holes, but he settled for a tie with Donald in second place after Charley Hoffman overtook him. Day has threatened more often than not this season, posting nine top-15 finishes in 18 starts.

Nick Watney
Deutsche Bank Championship odds: +2000

Fresh off a 10th-place at the Barclays. Watney has two victories this season; both were preceded by top-15 finishes, so he tends to tip us off when he’s about to go off. He can putt with the best of them when he’s on and, as he showed with a final-round 64 last week, Watney can go low.

Matt Kuchar
Deutsche Bank Championship odds: +2000

Kuchar may be the best ball-striker on this list and that bodes well for his chances of setting up bushels of birdie tries this week. He led The Barclays field in putting and finished second to Johnson overall. With nine top-10s to his name this season without a victory, he feels way overdue for a victory.

Dustin Johnson
Deutsche Bank Championship odds: +2000

If Johnson’s putter is on – and it was when he won The Barclays last week – he’s awfully tough to stop, as his length alone already gives him an edge on the field. Since Johnson is 16th on Tour in GIR, he has an excellent chance to attack pins all weekend. He’s a strong play for anyone who doesn’t care about the “back-to-back winners are rare” principle.

SOLID PICK

Vijay Singh
Deutsche Bank Championship odds: +3000

Watch out for Vijay! He enters the Deutsche Bank riding back-to-back top-fives and he also has the best history of any player at this tourney. Singh is the only two-time winner in field this week, having captured the event in 2004 and 2008, and he also owns the course record at 61. He’s awfully tempting, especially because of his value at +3000.

THE SLEEPER

Camilo Villegas
Deutsche Bank Championship odds: +5000

His sixth-place finish last week kept his playoff season alive, shooting him up from 109th to 51st in the FedEx Cup standings. Villegas’ approaches have been white-hot of late. He hit all 18 fairways during last Saturday’s round.

THE PICK

Sheesh. It feels like every guy on this list is going to win the Deutsche Bank. That’s what happens when the field shrinks to the 100 best players on Tour this season. But the picks that stand out most to me this week are Stricker, Kuchar and Singh.

Singh is tempting because of his past victories and value. Kuchar just seems like he’ll go off any day now. And some may lean away from Stricker because he offers the lowest return for your bet in the sportsbook.

But it’s my responsibility to tell you who I genuinely believe will win the tournament every week. And, deep down, even though Vijay would be the fun pick, I truly think Stricker takes this. He eats easy courses for breakfast and his sustained success at TPC Boston makes him a virtual sure bet to at least contend on Sunday.

2011 Deutsche Bank Championship pick: Steve Stricker +1200
