Plummeting Leafs Visit Flyers Friday Night

Toronto has fallen out of the playoff picture on the heels of their recent skid – they currently sit in tenth in the East – fading fast while the Flyers are sixth in the Conference – just three points up on the Leafs. Needless to say this game is critical for both teams.

Toronto has won both meeting of the season between the clubs – the last coming in overtime in Toronto March 8.

There isn`t much of a secret as to why the Leafs have fallen flat the last couple of weeks. James Reimer lost five straight posting a 4.22 GAA and when Jonathan Bernier declared himself fit to return to the lineup he allowed five goals to the Blues on Tuesday night!

Toronto is among the league worst in goals against – they allow 3.07 to their opposition per game. The Leafs give up a ton of shots and lately a good share of those shots are going in.

The Toronto offense keeps clipping along but they are getting no support at all from their defense and goaltending. The Leafs score 2.80 goals per games and they boast one of the most offensively gifted players in the game today. Phil Kessel has points in four straight games for the Maple Leafs and has 39 points in his last 29 games! Joffrey Lupul has three points in three games and Jake Gardiner has three points in two games.

But James van Riemsdyk has just one point in four games, Dion Phaneuf whose plus/minus has takes a major hit lately has one point in four games, Nikolai Kulemin is pointless in three games and David Clarkson is pointless in an incredible 14 games – money well spent wouldn`t you say?

Admittedly the Flyers were tired in their most recent 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers. The team has now lost two straight games after reeling off five consecutive wins at this time last week. Coach Craig Berube gave his team Thursday off in hopes of resting them up for important games against the Leafs and the Bruins this weekend.

In 12 games in March, Giroux has five goals and 13 assists for the Flyers – he has been on fire while Jacob Voracek has four points in three games, Scott Hartnell has six points in five games and Mark Streit has four points in five games. The team scored four goals per game during their recent five game win streak but totaled just three during their present two game losing streak.

The Flyers are a talented bunch – the offense should take care of itself.

Steve Mason should be back between the pipes Friday – he has played very well for the Flyers recently. Mason is 10-3-1 in his last 14 games for the Flyers with a 2.20 GAA – he is 2-1-0 with a 2.01 GAA and .938 save percentage in his last three games overall.

A few trends to consider:
• TOR are 4-12 in their last 16 vs. Metropolitan.
• PHI are 2-6 in their last 8 Fri. games.
• PHI are 20-7 in their last 27 home games.

Nothing is going right for the Toronto Maple Leafs right now – they simply can`t keep the puck out of the back of their net. The defense is seriously lacking confidence and the goaltenders aren`t stealing games like they did earlier this season. Toronto is what they are – an average team whose early season luck may have caught up to them.

My bet is Philadelphia sends the Leafs to their seventh straight loss Friday – bring out the calls for Coach Randy Carlisle`s head!

Pick: Philadelphia Flyers -161
