At the beginning of the 2009-10 season, many betting sharps probably picked the Red Wings and Caps as possible Stanley Cup Final entries for their respective conferences. Washington has held up its end of the bargain, staking out a massive lead in the Southeast division, but it’s been slow going for Detroit.
At least the Wings have an excuse for their shortcomings; they’ve e endured injuries to Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall, Johan Franzen, Danny Cleary and many others throughout the year. Though they’ve lost three of four, they have road wins over Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Jose this month. They’re getting healthier and they seem to elevate their play for big games. A major bright spot has been Jimmy Howard, who has a goals against average under 2.00 and save percentage above .935 over the last two months.
But do the Wings have a chance against the powerhouse Caps, who are 16-3-3 at home? I’ll say yes. Washington has won six of seven but just one of those victories came against a team currently in a playoff spot. The Caps are preying on the weak (Montreal, Florida, Atlanta, Toronto) and could get caught off guard tonight. I’d take a flier on Detroit.
