Nothing about the Nashville Predators is conventional. Despite their poor fan support and lack of an offensive star, they keep winning hockey games. They also have as many road wins as home wins this season. Tonight, they shoot for a Western-Canadian sweep after winning in Vancouver on Monday and Edmonton on Tuesday.
The Preds have traded victories with the Flames this year, with each team winning on the other’s home ice at least once. Most recently, Calgary came into Nashville and won 3-1 last week. As has been the case so often this season, Miikka Kiprusoff was the hero. But I wonder if that will still be the case tonight. Kipper is 1-2-1 with a 2.75 goals against average over his last four games. Those aren’t bad numbers but they’re not the numbers of a guy who “steals” games.
Given Calgary’s offensive struggles of late, especially those of Jarome Iginla (six straight games without a goal), I don’t see the Flames winning without Kipper stealing one. The Predators have won four straight road games and Shea Weber is playing the kind of hockey Calgary wishes it was getting from Dion Phaneuf. Expect a tight-checking game and another road triumph for Nashville.
