It was only a matter of time before Steven Stamkos and the Lightning stars found their scoring touch again. The question was whether or not Tampa Bay would have enough time to get going before it was too late. Facing elimination on Saturday, Lightning finally struck and Tampa Bay kept their playoff hopes alive with an 8-2 win at Pittsburgh to pull within one game of tying the series at three.

Stamkos stole first star honors with two goals and an assist, and Simon Gagne also scored twice as head coach Guy Boucher’s squad made an emphatic statement that this series isn’t over yet.

The Penguins actually finished the game with a 33-25 edge in shots, but the amount of quality scoring chances was skewed so much in the Lightning’s favor that the game was practically over by the end of the second game. Stamko’s second period goal at the seven-minute mark was the final of three that Tampa Bay scored in the frame to give them a 5-0 lead.

The Lightning have proven in two wins that they can compete with Pittsburgh, but now the task again becomes about putting together consecutive quality efforts.

In their two series’ wins, Tampa Bay has outscored the Penguins 13-3. However, after a 5-1 game two win the Lightning dropped consecutive games at home to fall to the brink of elimination. Now, in their second return to the St. Pete Times Forum they will look to give the sellout crowd something to cheer for.

While there was reason to celebrate after game five, Boucher understands that Pittsburgh will come out strong hoping to avoid dropping consecutive games for the first time in the series.

A quick start could go a long way to telling how this game will play out, something that has been key throughout the series.

The team that has scored first has won all five games so far, and that should have the Lightning buzzing again.

The game plan is simple for a Tampa Bay team that scored four goals on rebounds in game five, as they look to crash the net and make life miserable for Penguins’ netminder Marc-Andre Fleury. The Lightning have had the edge in terms of available offensive talent since the series began, and with the momentum now in their favor it is time for them to show it.

Losing all three games at home would be a disaster that the franchise cannot afford.

Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning -140
