You probably know the question every bettor needs to ask tonight, so let’s cut right to the chase: is Dwayne Roloson the right man to start Game 6 of the Eastern Conference in goal for the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight?

The 41-year-old puckstopper was a godsend from the moment Tampa acquired him at midseason and he carried the Bolts throughout the first two rounds of the playoffs. But, again, Roloson is 41. It was always conceivable that his body would give out on him after playing deeper and deeper into May. And his recent efforts have everyone wondering if that moment has finally arrived.

After getting pulled in Games 2 and 4, Roloson was benched for Tampa’s Game-5 loss. Mike Smith allowed two goals on 19 shots in his place. Coach Guy Boucher is going back to Roloson tonight with the Lightning facing elimination.

It appears as though Boucher is trying to do the same thing that Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault did with Roberto Luongo in round one, when he benched his goalie for Game 6 to rest him mentally for the crucial Game 7. It worked. Vancouver won that game and, a month later, they’re in the Stanley Cup final.

But will the same tactic work with Roloson, who is nine years older than Luongo?

The pick:

To me, the Game 6 pick comes down to the numbers versus what you can only see from watching the games. On paper, it looks like Tampa is due to win a game. After all, the Lightning have outshot Boston badly in two straight contests. And Roloson’s numbers can’t be that bad again, right?

On the other hand – did you see Roloson in Game 4? He looked beaten. He looked unfocused, almost irritated when he saw pucks coming his way. Even with a night off, I don’t think Roloson can re-summon his energy this deep in the playoffs.

The Bruins are just too big, too bad, too strong, and we knew that all along. Time for them to book their date with Vancouver.
