Calgary Flames @ Edmonton Oilers
Tonight, 9:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook odds: Flames -115, Oilers -105
Thanks to their 11-5-3 road record, the Flames don’t get spooked like some teams do when they hit the road; they’ll also be especially motivated renewing their heated rivalry with the Edmonton Oilers. After losing three straight games on home ice, Calgary will be happy to leave the Saddledome, though it’s slumping in every building, having lost six of seven games overall. Unlike in recent years, Miikka Kiprusoff hasn’t been the source of Calgary’s slump. He still boasts a sparkling 2.26 goals against average and .920 save percentage this season. The problem has been offense; the Flames have scored two or fewer goals eight times in 10 games this month.
Calgary’s luck should change dramatically tonight as it seeks a fourth straight victory versus Edmonton and third straight road win against the Oilers. Things can’t be going much worse for the Oil right now. Only three teams have allowed more goals then they have this season; they’re one of two teams in the West with a losing home record; and they’ve lost six straight games. Co-starting goalies Jeff Deslauriers and Nikolai Khabibulin both sport .910 save percentages, so they’re not the problem. The problem is that the Oil allow so many shots on goal – a constant symptom of Pat Quinn teams. Look for the Flames to pepper the Oilers tonight and win another instalment of the Battle of Alberta.
Pick: Flames -115
Phoenix Coyotes @ San Jose Sharks
Tonight, 10:30 p.m. ET
Sportsbook odds: Coyotes +160, Sharks -190
Hard to believe bettors have to think hard about tonight’s Coyotes/Sharks matchup but Phoenix continues to surprise, sporting one of the league’s top records. The Desert Dogs are doing it with phenomenal defense and, more specifically, unbelievable goaltending from Ilya Bryzgalov, who already has five shutouts this year. He’s licking his chops to dine on the Sharks again, as he beat them earlier this season and is 9-6 with a 2.28 goals against average and .928 save percentage against them in his career.
Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, who is competing with Bryzgalov for starting duties on the Russian Olympic team, has other things to say. He has seven shutouts in 41 career starts against the Coyotes. He’s also riding a Sharks team seeking its fourth straight win. The top line is rolling; NHL scoring leader Joe Thornton has 17 points in 10 December games. He and Nabby should lead San Jose to revenge tonight.
Pick: Sharks -190
