The surprising New York Islanders will try to keep their impressive season going on Friday night when they visit the scuffling Detroit Red Wings. The Isles have won two straight games after a 3-2 shootout win against New Jersey took them to 9-0 this year in games decided in extra time.

The Wings on the other hand is coming off a 1-0 shootout loss to Columbus – they have gone just 1-6 in the shootout this year.

The New York Islanders have won 15 of their last 20 games to sit in the top 10 in the NHL standings – eight of this wins have come in Overtime.

The Islanders have been getting it done this year with an above average offense and a good defense – a unit that should get a boost Friday with the return of top four guys Johnny Boychuk (upper body) and Travis Hamonic (upper body).

The Isles are averaging 3.00 goals per game this season – Kyle Okposo has five points in his last five games, Ryan Strome and Matt Martin each have two points in two games and Michail Grabovski has three points in four games.

Okposo his five-for-six in the shootout and Frans Nielsen is 4-for-6. If this game goes into the shootout New York has an immense advantage to say the least.

The defense and goaltending in particular hasn’t been great for New York as of late – Jaroslav Halak is 2-2-0 with a 3.67 GAA and .880 save percentage in his last four games played while Chad Johnson has been worse – 0-2-0 with a 4.58 GAA and .839 save percentage in his last two.

However, the duo has combined to stop 80% of the shootout opportunities against – impressive indeed.

The Isles have lost two straight games on the road while giving up 11 goals. Part of the reason is the league-worst penalty kill which is operating at an ugly 71.1% clip. New York has allowed eight goals in their last 18 shorthanded opportunities against!

The Detroit Red Wings have gone cold – four straight losses have generated just four goals for the offense. The difference in this game however could be New York’s penalty kill versus Detroit’s power play – one that has scored in three of its last seven attempts and is operating at 22.3% – top 10 in the NHL.

Overall Detroit is scoring 2.84 goals per game. Nik Kronwall has just one point in his last six games, Dan Cleary is pointless in three games and Kyle Quincey and Darren Helm haven’t hit the score sheet in their last five games.

Johan Franzen could be back in the lineup after missing Tuesday’s game which would be a boost to an offense that really needs every body right now.

Don’t blame Jimmy Howard for the recent Red Wings woes. He is just 0-0-2 in his last two starts but has posted a superb 0.92 GAA and excellent .964 save percentage over that span.

NHL Gambling Trends

• NYI are 15-5 in their last 20 overall.
• Under is 6-2 in NYI last 8 games following a win.
• Over is 22-8-2 in NYI last 32 Fri. games.
• DET are 48-17 in their last 65 Fri. games.
• Over is 10-4-1 in DET last 15 vs. Metropolitan.
• DET are 482-236-27 in their last 745 home games.

The Islanders have lost four of their last six road games while Detroit has lost three straight at home – all in the shootout! My guess is that this game doesn’t get to extra time here.

Detroit’s power play should be able to feast on the Islanders hideous penalty kill. Detroit is much better than their recent record suggests – an important win against a Conference foe is on the horizon.

Detroit Red Wings -130
