The New York Rangers staved off elimination on Wednesday night and ensured at least one more game in the 2013-2014 NHL season with a 2-1 win at Madison Square Gardens. The Rangers’ hole is still a deep one however – they are down 3-1 with two of the next possible three games in Los Angeles.

It took some significant puck luck and a super-human effort by Henrik Lundqvist in Game 4 – could the Rangers have blown all their good karma in one game? Or were the breaks New York finally got a signal of a series about to completely change?
The bad news for the New York Rangers is that they will have to win three more elimination games if they hope to hoist the Cup this year – the good news is that the team is 11-2 in their last 13 elimination games although eight of those wins have come at MSG. New York is just 6-6 away from home during the postseason – they certainly have their work cut out for them!

A couple of struggling Rangers players looked much better in Game 3, namely Henrik Lundqvist who made 40 saves – 15 in the third period alone to preserve the win. He was the difference maker that the Rangers absolutely needed to take this series back to California – 40 stops after a save percentage of .892 and a 3.13 goals-against average in the first three games of the series. King Henrik is an incredible 11-2 in the Rangers’ last 13 elimination games with a 1.30 goals-against average and a .959 save percentage.

Martin St. Louis scored and registered just his second point in six games while the Rangers as a team snapped a 123 minute streak in which they failed to score on Jonathan Quick. But they only recorded 15 shots on goal – just one in the final 20 minutes!
There doesn`t seem to be a lot of panic in the Kings dressing room – there really shouldn`t be! Up 3-1 in the series, they can takes solace in the fact that they outshot the Rangers 41-19 including 15-1 in a frantic third period, they won 41 of 65 faceoffs and they had two shot stop right on the Rangers` goal line. Los Angeles has registered at least 41 shots in three of the first four games – only a special effort from Henrik Lundqvist has kept them from drinking from Lord Stanley`s Cup.
The Kings are still the top scoring team in the playoffs – nearly four goals per game and they still have some guy named Jonathan Quick manning the crease. A good portion of LAs roster won the cup two years ago as well – invaluable experience heading into Game 5.

• Home team is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
The LA Kings were definitely the better team on Wednesday night – they were unlucky to not be planning their parade already.
The Rangers did a good job of showing that they weren`t dead but my guess is that their win Wednesday only delayed the inevitable. Back home where they are 7-4 in the playoffs and 2-0 in the Final, the Kings should wrap this up. Bring out the razors – it`s time to get rid of the hideous beards.
