Vancouver has been sizzling in December going 10-1-1 while the Flyers have gone 5-1-1 in their last seven games overall. Something has to give in this battle of teams playing their best hockey of the season.

The Flyers enter Monday night’s game as an average offensive squad but they do possess one of the hottest offensive players in the game right now. Wayne Simmonds has scored two goals in each of the past three games but he has just one goal in his last 13 games against Vancouver. One can also point to Philadelphia’s recent success on the power play for their turnaround. They are 12 for their last 46 with the man advantage including three goals in five chances last time out against Edmonton.

Jakub Voracek has six goals and nine assists during a career-high nine-game point streak, Scott Hartnell has three points in two games and Bradon Coburn has four points in his last six games and Claude Giroux has 10 points (three goals) his past five games. Things are certainly trending in the right direction for the Flyers and it all starts in the offensive zone.

Defensively the Flyers have been a disappointment – the team allows 2.74 goals per game and neither keeper has been particularly sharp. Steve Mason has been by far the better of the two and should start Monday. He is 15-9-4 with a 2.37 GAA and .921 save percentage on the year.

The Vancouver Canucks have been terrific of late and on home ice they have been nearly untouchable. The team has given up an average of 1.5 goals while compiling three shutouts and they’ve outscored opponents 20-6 while winning six in a row at home – incredible.

And with Roberto Luongo still on the shelf with a lower body injury it will be up to Eddie Lack to continue the roll. Lack is 5-0-0 with a 0.98 goals-against average in six – the Canucks are in good hands.

Vancouver has been getting it done in the defensive zone – no Canucks has been Hot in the offensive end during the impressive streak. Mike Santorelli has nine points in nine games after scoring his ninth goal of the season against the Flames, Jannik Hansen has three goals in Vancouver’s past six games and Dan Hamhuis has two points in two games – that’s it for the Hot List for the Canucks! David Booth has just one point in four games and Chris Higgins is pointless in three

A few trends to consider:
• Over is 9-1-1 in PHI last 11 overall.
• PHI are 3-10 in their last 13 Mon. games.
• Over is 6-2-2 in PHI last 10 Mon. games.
• Under is 23-4-4 in VAN last 31 home games.
• VAN are 9-2 in their last 11 overall.
• Under is 14-4-3 in VAN last 21 Mon. games.
• Over is 5-2-1 in the last 8 meetings.

The John Tortarella scheme is working to near perfection in Vancouver – they are the hottest team in the league and have been getting it done with defense and goaltending – not exactly the most exciting formula by an effective one nonetheless. The Flyers are just 7-9-4 on the road this year – hard to see them snapping an impressive six game home win streak for Vancouver. The Canucks are too hot, too good in the defensive zone and too motivated to finish the month perfect at home to be denied in this one.

Pick: Vancouver Canucks -142
