That sound that you just heard was 20 members of the San Jose Sharks choking simultaneously! The background noise was the collective pounding hearts and cries of “not again” by Sharks fans everywhere! San Jose will fight to shed their choker status on Thursday night when they host the Detroit Red Wings in an improbable Game 7 of the Western Conference semi-final series.

I know that we have heard enough about the Wings being only the fourth team to come back from a 3-0 hole but Detroit has a ton of momentum going into Game 7 – they have managed some amazing comebacks and they never seem to be out of a game.

Pavel Datsyuk has been superb and has recorded a point in nine of Detroit’s ten games in the playoffs – as consistent as they come. Henrik Zetterberg looks terrific too – he has two goals and five assists in the five games that he has played in the postseason. Valtteri Filppula has finally woken up and there is always Nick Lidstrom – the Wings are suddenly clicking.

In goal Jimmy Howard continues to play well and he gives his team a chance to win every night. He stole Game 5 and was solid in Game 6 – no worries for Detroit in net!

The San Jose Sharks definitely have more negatives than positives going into Game 7 – that’s for sure. Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley are taking a ton of flack for their efforts in recent games – they have a combined one goal in the six games of the series – Yuk! Ryan Clowe (team leader with 13 points) is likely to sit again which is an enormous hole for the Sharks – even if he plays he’ll be less than 100%.

I have said it all series long and I will say it again – I don’t Antti Niemi. He did have an absolutely amazing Game 6 (42 saves) and was largely responsible for them keeping the game close but Niemi has crumbled under third period pressure (just like his team) of the last three games.

NHL Betting Trends:

Over is 12-4 in DET last 16 overall.
DET are 8-3 in their last 11 overall.
SJ are 10-4 in their last 14 vs. Central.

SJ are 34-15 in their last 49 overall.
DET are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings in San Jose.
DET are 5-11 in the last 16 meetings.

Betting Prediction: The Detroit Red Wings are 2-6 in their last eight meetings in San Jose and are just 5-11 in the last 16 against the Sharks. The home team has won 62% of Game 7’s in the history of Stanley Cup Playoffs.

All right, now that we got some of the stats out of the way we can safely throw them out the window. The things that were working early in the series for the San Jose Sharks are totally gone, namely the power play and Ryan Clowe. With Clowe uncertain to play and a daunted power play that has gone 0-10 in the last two games, I think the Sharks are in line for their greatest in a long, long line of meltdowns. Detroit is more experienced, less intimidated and most importantly they are more hungry. Let the San Jose shakeup begin!

Pick: Detroit Red Wings – even
