Sharks vs. Red Wings Preview

This just in: The San Jose Sharks are playoff underachievers no more! The Sharks showed a lot of character on Tuesday night when they came back from a 3-1 deficit with just 13 minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime, and won early in the first overtime period.

The San Jose finally got a good performance from the Original Joe and an average performance from the Other Joe. Joe Thornton scored an important goal that began the comeback and also set up the overtime winning goal by Patrick Marleau on a beautiful pass on a two on one break.

Thornton had to wake up and now that he has, the Red Wings are in deeper trouble than they think. Joe Pavelski had his personal five game goal scoring streak snapped but did manage an assist for what it’s worth.

Evgeni Nabokov continued his stellar play and appears to have finally graduated to the ranks of “good big-game goaltender”.

The Detroit Red Wings appear to be getting punished by the hockey Gods for some unforeseen reason.

They have played well, competed hard, but they haven’t been able to get their first win of the second round. If it’s not penalty differential, it’s fluky goals.

It does not appear to be the Wings year and most outside of Hockeytown are happy that another team may just represent the Western Conference in the Stanley Cup Final this year.

Henrik Zetterberg finally got his first points of the series in Game 3 but it might be a case of a little too little a little too late. Thomas Holmstrom and Dan Cleary also scored but the team could not generate the all important fourth goal.

Goaltender Jimmy Howard is taking a bit of heat for the weak tying goal that he gave up but the loss cannot totally be pinned on him. He has been good in the post season for the Wings and certainly deserves better than an 0-3 record during the Conference semi-final.

He is just another example of the Wings efforts no being paid off with wins.

The Detroit Red Wings are too good a team to get swept, this much is certain. They are also too prideful to concede a series at Joe Louis Arena.

There is little doubt now that the San Jose Sharks will win the series, but it will have to wait until the weekend.
