Canadiens vs. Flyers Preview

The Montreal Canadiens appear to be in a bit of trouble in the Eastern Conference Final against the Philadelphia Flyers. They have yet to score a goal against the Flyers and despite having better energy in Game 2, the Habs have yet to prove a dangerous team capable of moving on to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Philadelphia Flyers are simply rolling. They have now scored an NHL record thirteen straight goals since going down 3-0 in Game 7 of their series against the Boston Bruins. They are scoring, defending and keeping the puck out of their own net.

Philadelphia is scary especially since they are not getting Mike Richards’ “A Game”.

The return of Simon Gagne to the lineup has been huge for the Philadelphia Flyers. He has scored a goal in each of the first two games of this series while at the same time he has provided a stabilizing force on both the Flyers first line and first power play unit.

Danny Briere’s move to center ice has provided a much needed scoring boon as well. Briere has looked like the best player on the ice for the Flyers and is currently enjoying a streak in which he has tallied 18 points in his last 11 games.

Ville Leino has also been a man on a mission, giving the Flyers two effective lines that can score at any time.

The previously cloudy Philadelphia goaltending situation has been the surprise of the playoffs and has been the difference in the Flyers last three games. Michael Leighton who replaced the effective Brian Boucher has gone 166 minutes without allowing a goal and has saved all of the 58 shots that he has faced in the Conference Final. The Philadelphia defense is allowing Leighton to see the puck and is supporting him by clearing rebounds and not allowing traffic in front of him.

The Montreal Canadiens reached the Conference Final mostly because of their discipline and game planning. Both have been absent against the Philadelphia Flyers.

It will be up to the Habs to stay out of the penalty box and to protect Jaroslav Halak from the big bodies of the Flyers. A return to a raucous Bell Center should help inject a little emotion into a Canadiens team that has come out just OK in the Eastern Conference Final games so far.

NHL playoff goal scoring leader Mike Cammalleri was largely invisible in Game 1 but was a little better in Game 2. Still, his magical run appears to be stalling at precisely the wrong time. Cammalleri’s supporting cast has not been much better. Tomas Plekanec, Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez are fighting to even get a chance against the Philadelphia net minder. The luck of the Habs offense will turn around but hopefully it is not too late.

The Montreal defense that did an amazing job of keeping traffic from the front of their own goal has looked tired and has not been able to prevent the Flyers from bothering Jaroslav Halak. It is back to the drawing board for Montreal who has to figure out a way to let Halak see the puck. Jaroslav Halak’s wheels just might be coming off a little. After two series’ in which he was tested way too often, Halak might just be starting to tire. Will we see Carey Price between the pipes for Montreal? Time will tell.

Montreal has to get back to what has made them successful in the post season so far. Preparation, discipline and relentless defensive play are going to have to resurface for the Habs or this series could be a short one.

A home town crowd is just the remedy that the Canadiens need to make a series of it.
