The Detroit Red Wings will try to bounce back in their Western Conference semi-final series against the San Jose Sharks. San Jose was clearly the better team on Friday night and now is time for the Wings to respond.

Things certainly could have been worse for the Detroit Red Wings in Game 1 of the series – their injured stars came back and looked good and their goaltender was terrific. The difference in the game was the penalties – Detroit was shorthanded an uncharacteristic seven times in Game 1 to only four times for the San Jose Sharks.

Jimmy Howard has given Wings fans reason for optimism going into game 2. He faced 46 shots in Game 1 and was solid as a rock.

San Jose got their shots on Friday night but they lacked an all-too-familiar finish. Against Los Angeles the Sharks directed a lot of rubber against Jonathan Quick but got shut out once and held to two goals or under in three of the six games. Still Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and the rest of the San Jose Joes looked pretty good but know that they will face a better all around Wings on Sunday afternoon.

As for Antti Niemi, he looked good but he didn’t have to look great. His team played very well around him and maybe made him look better than he actually was.

NHL Betting Trends:
Over is 9-1 in DET last 10 vs. Western Conference.
Over is 9-3 in DET last 12 Sun. games.
SJ are 8-1 in their last 9 vs. Central.
Over is 9-3-2 in SJ last 14 games following a win.
SJ are 23-8 in their last 31 games following a win.
Over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

Betting Prediction: San Jose has now won nine of the last eleven meetings between the two teams.

We all knew that the Wings would come out a bit flat in Game 1 and that’s what happened. They were a step slow on Friday but should be up to speed on Sunday afternoon. Zetterberg and Franzen will be better as will the whole team. Jimmy Howard won’t have to steal this one for Detroit – the offense will!
