Two surging Western Conference teams meet in Calgary on a light Wednesday night of NHL action when the San Jose Sharks who have gone 4-1-2 in their last seven games meet the Flames who have won seven of their last nine overall. Calgary is coming off an impressive 5-2 win Monday against the Jets while the Sharks suffered a 5-4, 13-shooter shootout loss to the Oilers also on Monday.

The San Jose Sharks finally flexed some muscle at home after a terrible stretch on home ice threatened to push them out of a top eight spot in the West. They now hit the road after a seven game home stand that saw them defeat the likes of the Blackhawks, the Ducks and the Kings.
The offense is still a tad underwhelming overall – they have averaged 2.76 goals per game this year. But the team has picked up their scoring lately – Joe Pavelski has five goals over his last five games Joe Thornton has recorded 10 points in six games, Patrick Marleau has five points in four games and Matt Tennyson has three points in three games to lead the way for San Jose. Logan Couture was named Sharks Player of the Month for January with four goals and eight assists in 12 games.
Antti Niemi should get the nod in net despite looking a bit shaky against Edmonton on Monday- four goals on 36 shots. Niemi is 1-1-1 with a 2.33 goals-against average and .908 save percentage against Calgary and is 1-0-1 in his last two starts overall with a 1.92 GAA and .944 save percentage.

The Calgary Flames continue to be one of the nicest surprises in the NHL this season – they sit two points behind the Sharks in the Western Conference standings meaning that Wednesday night’s game is of the utmost importance for the team. They have been effective in both ends of the rink as of late and have been playing a total team game – awfully tough to defend.
Need proof? In Monday night’s win against Winnipeg, 12 Flames recorded a point and the defense made it so that Jonas Hiller only had to make 17 saves for the win.
Sean Monahan has six goals in eight games, Joe Colborne has seven points in his past seven games, David Jones and Lance Bouma each have three points in two games and Paul Byron, Mark Giordano and even Mason Raymond each have two points each in their last two games. Jonas Hiller figures to get the start between the pipes Wednesday – he has really turned a corner after an ugly stretch prior to the All-Star break.

Hiller has been terrific in his last five games posting a very good 1.58 GAA over that span – he has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his past four starts.
