The Wings enter the game after losing the first two games on their current road trip including 3-1 last night in Ottawa while the Rangers have gone 1-2-2 in their last five games and are coming off a hard fought shootout loss to the Blues on Monday night.
The Detroit Red Wings simply didn’t answer the bell last night in Ottawa – they were outshot 16-2 in the first period and despite picking up their play were unable to recover after that.

The Wings have had their issues on the road so far this young season – they have lost four if their last five away from Joe Louis Arena and are just 2-2-2 so far.
The Wings are healthy again and despite not looking great last night are a different team with Pavel Datsuyk back in the lineup. But it has been the play of Henrik Zetterberg that has carried this team so far – he scored again last night and now has four goals and 11 assists in Detroit’s 12 games this season. Justin Abdelkader has been good and Gustaf Nyquist has been a revelation – he has seven goals already to pace the team.
Although the offense won’t wow you, the Wings are averaging an OK 2.50 goals per game. The power play hasn’t been great – just 10.9% but the overall play has been impressive thus far.

Jimmy Howard played between the pipes last night so it is reasonable to expect Jonas Gustavsson to start tonight. He is 1-1-0 with a 1.45 GAA and .935 save percentage this year for a surprisingly good Wings defense that is allowing 2.08 goals per game.
The New York Rangers have been ravaged by injuries but the team is still battling – their last two losses have come in extra time against some very good teams. Ryan McDonagh (shoulder), Derek Stepan (leg), Kevin Klein (foot), Dan Boyle (hand) and John Moore (suspension) will all miss tonight’s game but last year’s leading scorer Mats Zuccarello back from injury – he will provide a boost indeed.
New York is averaging a respectable 2.64 goals per game this year and will get one of their biggest weapons back in the fold tonight. He should help a power play that is operating at just a 9% clip so far.
Expect to see Henrik Lundqvist in goal tonight for the Rangers after Cam Talbot played Monday.
Lundqvist has been incredible versus the Wings recording three straight wins over Wednesday night’s foe – all at home. He’s allowed one goal on 95 shots, shutting them out in the last two.
