The recent time off can work two-fold and be either a negative or positive for teams. For the Penguins, they’re likely hoping that the break will rejuvenate them for a second half push after stumbling into All Star weekend on a four game losing streak.

The Jets meanwhile were rolling before the break and will be hoping that the time off won’t break up the good mojo they had going, carrying a 7-2-1 run into the break.

Jets

As mentioned, the Jets have been soaring of late, recording seven wins in their last 10 games including five in a row to close out their first half of the season.

Their goaltending has been surprisingly very good and for a team that looked like they would be challenged to find goals, they’ve been filling the net of late as well. Winnipeg has netted 22 goals in their five game win streak, which is very impressive for a team whose first line features Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler.

Sure those two are solid players, but you wouldn’t rate them among the league’s best.

Instead the Jets have gone against their detractors and have had offense chipped in from all over, including a four goal outburst by Mathieu Perreault in an 8-2 thrashing of the Florida Panthers.

Currently the Jets hold sole possession of the first wildcard spot in the Western Conference but this next month will truly be make or break as they have a very tough schedule in front of them that is littered with teams that currently hold playoff spots. In February the Jets will take on Calgary, Vancouver, Chicago, Nashville, Detroit, Washington and St. Louis.

Penguins

It’s not quite make or break time for the Penguins who are still clinging to second place in the Metropolitan Division. That lead could evaporate quickly though if this team doesn’t get back on track, especially with the Rangers surging lately and Washington coming on strong.

The Pens need to find their stride and fast or one of the most talented teams in the East could find themselves in a dogfight for a wild card after nearly a decade of holding one of the top spots in the conference.

This team has more than enough talent, but will be without Sidney Crosby tonight who missed the All Star game with an upper body injury. Crosby shouldn’t be out for too long and he will definitely need to continue his pace that has him third in NHL scoring if Pittsburgh is going to keep pace with the Islanders.

It looks like Tomas Greiss will get the start in net tonight, giving regular number one Marc Andre Fleury an extra day of rest after the All Star Game. The Pens also play back to back with a tough game against their division rivals from Washington tomorrow so expect to see Fleury between the pipes for that one.

Jets vs. Penguins 4* Free Pick

The Penguins took the first meeting between these two in Winnipeg in a shootout. Pittsburgh also swept the two game series last year between these two. I like the Pens to get rolling again in the second half, just not tonight though. Pittsburgh will be without Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang is listed as questionable.

Just too many key guys out for a team that has been struggling and I think the Jets take this one.
