The Habs won’t get to honor the long-time captain and 10-time Stanley Cup winner at home until next Tuesday, when Vancouver travels to the Bell Centre.

In spite of sad news, there are games still to be played – the Canadiens must be sharp if they intend to leave the State of Hockey with a victory.

To look at the positives, the Canadiens have been playing some excellent hockey this season. The bleu, blanc et rouge currently sit second in the Atlantic division with 36 points and a sterling 17-7-2 record, trailing only Tampa Bay.

Goaltender Carey Price has been his usual fantastic self; the 27-year old is arguably the world’s best netminder right now.

Other contributors have been scoring threat Max Pacioretty, youngsters Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher and of course, colorful Toronto native P.K. Subban on the blueline.

It sort of happened under everyone’s nose, but the Habs are well-positioned to be an Eastern Conference contender this year. Look out for them.

Transitioning to the home side, the Wild have used strong piecemeal goaltending and a sharp penalty kill to be a middle player in the tough Central division.

Defenseman Marco Scandella has been in the news a lot lately. First he was scoring a game-winning goal against Dallas last week, then he was inking a five-year contract extension with Minnesota, promptly following that by giving some of that money back after an illegal hit to the head of St. Louis forward T.J. Oshie.

Stars Zach Parise and Ryan Suter give Minnesota solid bedrock for contention. If Nino Niederreiter continues to light the lamp (11 goals) and veteran goalie Niklas Backstrom sustains his resurgence between the pipes (2.01 goals-against average), the Wild will be in good shape.

Minnesota is coming off a shootout loss to the Blues and even with a 13-9-1 record, the Wild need to string some wins together if they intend to keep pace with the Blues, the Nashville Predators and, of course, the dynastic Chicago Blackhawks.

Montreal 4, Minnesota 3

As stated earlier, the Canadiens have been overwhelmingly good this season and, following a strong pep talk from Francophone head coach Michel Therrien in the wake of the Beliveau news, I expect them to come into the Twin Cities with an inspired effort.
