The Habs enter Thursday night’s game hot however – 13-3-1 in their last 17 games overall including a 3-2 win over Dallas on Tuesday night. New York trails Montreal by five points in the Eastern Conference – Thursday night’s game is crucial for both sides.

The Montreal Canadiens have been terrific the last three weeks and Tuesday night’s win proved that the All-Star break didn’t cool them off. Montreal will have some motivation to avenge their loss in November and to prove that their defeat in the Eastern Conference Final was the exception, not the rule.

Everything is going well for the Habs – the offense has been consistently good, the defense as always is top tier and even the special teams has taken their game to a different level – Montreal is 5-for-12 on the power play in their last three games – all wins.

It is likely that Carey Price gates the start between the pipes – he is an incredible 11-2-1 in this last 14 starts overall with a 1.64 GAA over that span. However, Price is just 1-4-0 with a 3.98 GAA in his last four trips to Madison Square Garden but has shut the Rangers out four times and has won six of the last eight regular season meeting with New York (most of that success coming at home however).

The offense has been clicking along for Montreal as well. Alex Galchenyuk has scored in three straight games, Brendan Gallagher has four points in his last five games, Andrei Markov has five points in three games and PK Subban has three points in his last two games. Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec are absent from the Hot List but are threats each and every time they hit the ice.

The New York Rangers were the hottest team in the NHL prior to the All-Star break-they went 16-3-0 to put themselves in the conversation as one of the teams to beat in the Eastern Conference. Their first game back after the break was a bit of a disappointment however – a 4-1 loss Tuesday to the cross-town Islanders.

The Rangers have return to the defensive style that made them a force last season – it starts and ends with Henrik Lundqvist who has been sensational the last couple of months. Prior to the All-Star break King Henrik was an astounding 14-2-0 with a 1.71 GAA – he allowed four goals on 30 shots Tuesday.

Overall the Rangers have become one of the stingiest defenses in the league – they hadn’t allowed more than three goals in their previous 20 games before Tuesday night’s loss. Things have a way of balancing themselves out- expect New York to return to the stifling brand of hockey that they have displayed the last couple of months.

Offensively the Rangers are certainly exceeding expectations in averaging 2.96 goals per game. There may be some concern that the Islanders shut them out for 59 minutes and 52 seconds but overall we can expect a better offensive display Thursday.

The Rangers have Rick Nash who has been at the top of the goal scoring race all season long, Martin St. Louis and Chris Kreider who each have four points in four games and Carl Hagelin going – Hagelin has three points in his last four games.

There are some struggling players too – Ryan McDonagh has one point in nine games, Lee Stempniak is pointless in six games and Dan Boyle has been held off the score sheet in his last seven contests.

NHL Gambling Trends

• MON are 7-1 in their last 8 vs. Metropolitan.
• MON are 7-2 in their last 9 games following a win.
• Under is 16-6-5 in MON last 27 road games.
• NYR are 20-7 in their last 27 overall.
• Under is 23-9-7 in NYR last 39 Thu. games.
• Over is 7-3-1 in NYR last 11 vs. Atlantic.
• Under is 13-4-6 in the last 23 meetings.

Both teams have a lot to prove on Thursday night and both bring strong all-around teams to the contest. The Canadiens are 8-3-0 in their past 11 regular-season games against the Rangers.

New York is 10-5-0 in its past 15 games against Montreal at Madison Square Garden – this is a tough game to call. But I’m going with Montreal in this one as the underdog.

Montreal Canadiens +119

They look like the better all-around team in this one and can’t resist them at +119.
