The surging Colorado Avalanche will attempt to keep their season turnaround going on Monday night when the host a slumping Montreal Canadiens team that enters on the heels of a three game losing streak.

Montreal should be a motivated team after losing both ends of a home-and-home to the Sabres and the Avs will be eager of avenge a 3-2 loss in the only meeting of the two clubs October 18.

For the Montreal Canadiens it seems like a little bad luck has come to them the last week or so. A brutal bounce on Friday led to a loss at lowly Buffalo and an uncharacteristically average performance on home ice led to a shootout loss to the same team Saturday. To say they were outplayed over the weekend would be an exaggeration – they outshot the Sabres by 24 in both games.

Now the team that had the best record in the NHL just last week must find a way to rebound off a three game losing streak. To see why the Habs are struggling – just look at the Not Hot list. Max Pacioretty, PK Subban, PA Parenteau and Dale Weiss each have just one point in their last four games, Alex Galchanyuk has two points in six games and Sergei Gonchar is pointless in seven.

However Galchenyuk got an assist Saturday night and Brendan Gallagher who just signed a $22.5 million extension scored his first goal in six games Saturday. The scoring slumps likely won’t last long but they are sure holding back this team right now. Simply put Montreal just isn’t getting any bounces.

We can’t blame Carey Price for Montreal’s recent woes – he is 6-2-0 with a 1.51 goals-against average over his last eight starts after stopping 23 shots Friday.

The Colorado Avalanche have returned to legitimacy after a slow start to their season – they have won three of their last four games and are now just one game under .500. The problem for the Avs so far is goals against – they are allowing 3.04 goals per game so far.

Seymon Varlamov remains on injured reserve leaving the onus on rookie Calvin Pickard who makes his third straight start. He’s been OK – 3-3-0 on the years with a 2.20 GAA and .931 save percentage but is 3-1-0 in his last four starts with a very good 1.41 GAA and .955 save percentage.

We can thank an uptick in offense for Colorado’s recent turnaround. They have scored four or more goals in three of their last four games and are finally starting to get contributions from a power play that was 1 for 31 in 11 games prior to scoring two last time out against Dallas.

Tyson Barrie had three assists Saturday and has seven points (seven assists) in his past seven games, Nathan MacKinnon has five assists in his last four games,

Alex Tanguay has four points in two games, Gabriel Landeskog has six points in four games and Jarome Iginla has four points in his last five games.

Colorado is a talented team that is finally starting to resemble so.
