The Chicago Blackhawks are starting to put it in playoff gear and have run off a tidy little 7-2-1 stretch over their last 10 games and could creep to within two points of second in the Central Division with a win tonight.

The Flyers looked like they still had an outside shot at making a playoff push about a month ago, but a 2-4-4 stretch has all but eliminated them from contention.

Chicago

Despite not having Patrick Kane in the lineup for the past month due to a broken clavicle and sniper Patrick Sharp firing blanks most of the season, the Blackhawks still find themselves among the top teams in the Western Conference and can get to within three points of the conference lead tonight with a win, and would still have a game in hand on the Blues and two on the Ducks (both tied with 99 points).

The Hawks have really turned it on thanks in large part to Corey Crawford finding his game at right time. Aside from a small blip against Dallas four nights ago, Crawford has been outstanding, posting a 1.44 GAA and .954 SV% over his last nine starts.

This team has always been able to score goals, though there have been periods this season where they’ve gone cold. They seem to have found their scoring touch again, with big 6-2 and 4-1 wins over the Sharks and Islanders respectively.

If Crawford stays locked in and the team stays committed to defending well in front of him, this Hawks team is going to be a favourite to make a run to the Stanley Cup finals once again.

Philadelphia

It’s been a really weird year for the Flyers. This team has all the talent to be up battling with teams like Pittsburgh and the two New York teams for tops in the Metropolitan Division, but for whatever reason they just haven’t been able to put it together this year.

It seems strange to say it but this team looks like they really miss Scott Hartnell, not only for his offensive contribution but his attitude and work ethic is something that the Flyers could really use right now. Hartnell is having a great season in Columbus and the Flyers haven’t found someone to fill his skates as of yet.

Goaltending has also been a sore spot for the Flyers this season. Steve Mason has played very well in spurts but he can’t seem to stay healthy and Ray Emery just flat out isn’t a very good goalie. Mason’s numbers are respectable at a 2.28 GAA and .925 SV% but his injuries have allowed him to start just 42 games, where the Flyers would likely want that number up around 55-58 at this point in the season.

Blackhawks vs. Flyers 4* Free Pick

This should be a no-brainer. The Blackhawks are giving a pretty good price at -152 as they’re the road team in this one.

If the Blackhawks were playing in Chicago you’d likely be looking at somewhere around -210. In either building though the Blackhawks are just the better team and the Flyers are scuffling right now with four straight losses and are returning home from a western Canada road trip.

Take Chicago in this one.
