With an 8-12-3 record, the Flyers are gradually getting left behind in the Metropolitan division race, while San Jose is not its usual strong self, just bouncing back from a four-game losing streak and head coach Todd McLellan’s seat is piping hot.

The Sharks just earned a good 6-4 victory over the intra-state rival Anaheim Ducks, but before that it was looking pretty bleak in Silicon Valley.

Sharks fans are used to perennial strong play, whatever else can be said about this team’s failings in the postseason. This season, at 11-10-4, the Sharks rank only fifth in the Pacific division, and it’s not cutting the mustard in the Shark Tank.

McLellan has been in San Jose for years and his message may be growing stale. Regardless, with Philly coming out to the West Coast, it’s a great opportunity to continue getting back on track.

The Flyers have a strong power play (ranking seventh in the league at a clip of 22.2%) but apart from that, it’s ugly. Philadelphia is quickly approaching the Carolinas, Columbuses and Buffaloes of the world for Eastern Conference futility.

It’s a common trend with struggling teams: Undisciplined play, spotty goaltending and a miserable penalty kill unit. You cannot struggle in those three facets of the game in the modern NHL and expect to have any success.

While frustrating because Philly has plenty of talent (Jakub Voracek, Claude Giroux, Matt Read and Wayne Simmonds come to mind) there’s been buzz about the Flyers potentially making a deal with Edmonton to shake things up. It would be a good idea to give one or more players per sinking franchise a fresh start.

The Sharks also excel on the power play, but they must get steady five-on-five offensive production from someone not named Logan Couture or Joe Thornton. As much as “Jumbo Joe” catches flak for various reasons, the big playmaker from St. Thomas, ON, puts up steady seasons time after time.

Couture is a bona fide star.

It has been 31-year old Antti Niemi carrying the mail for San Jose, with fellow goalie Alex Stalock – who showed some promising flashes – on the disabled list.

The Finn has been only OK in 2014, with his 8-7-3 record.

Take the UNDER

This should be a classic case of the Western Conference showing its dominance over the East, while subversive whispers continue in the City of Brotherly Love.
