Hey – despite the Flyers’ disappointing record, it’s still a big game every time they visit the Penguins. After starting the New Year on a low note, the Flyers got back on track last night with a decisive victory over Toronto. Daniel Briere led the way with two goals as the Flyers got offense from multiple lines.
When the Richards/Gagne/Giroux and the Hartnell/Carter/Briere line are both rolling, the Flyers are very tough to stop.
It’s worth noting, however, that (a) You can’t put a ton of stock into beating the Leafs and (b) last night was the first time in seven games that Philly played a home game. Now, the weary Flyers hit the road again, though they’re staying within Pennsylvania to battle Pittsburgh. The Penguins carried a nasty slump into 2010, losing five straight games, but four of those defeats came on the road.
They finally returned home on Tuesday handled the Thrashers easily.
The Pens may have turned a corner that night; all that’s left is for Evgeni Malkin to bust out, as he’s gone six games without a goal. Already 3-0 against Philly this season, Pittsburgh’s odds are good tonight at home.
