The Red Wings have climbed back into the Eastern Conference playoff picture with wins in each of their two games since the All-Star break. In their last game, a 6-1 win in Ottawa, the team really got its offensive game going despite the absence of top play-makers Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. The team scored four goals in the first period and to more in the second with three of those goals coming from forward Johan Franzen.

Center Gustav Nyquist assisted on two of those goals as he continues his breakout campaign, and captain Niklas Kronwall had three assists. The win closed out a 4-1-1 month of February for the Wings. The game was just the second back for Franzen after he missed 27 of 28 games and the Olympics with complications from a concussion. His contribution at the offensive end is particularly important given the continued absence of Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Franzen was named the NHL’s first star of the week after finishing the week with three goals and five points.

The Red Wings’ offense will certainly need to be in fine form on Tuesday as they’ll face one of the best defensive teams in the league in the Devils, though New Jersey will turn to “backup” goaltender Martin Brodeur in this one after Corey Schneider allowed four goals to San Jose in the team’s last game, a 4-2 loss. Schneider’s play was particularly poor in the deciding third period, allowing two goals on only four shots. While their ability to slow opponents is a given, New Jersey has been able to score some goals of their own of late, with Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias combining for six goals and six assists in the team’s last three games.

Tuesday’s game could yield a special performance from Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur who will be given a final attempt at auditioning for another job with a contending team as he surely must hope to be out of town come Wednesday’s trade deadline rather than serve as the backup with a team outside of the playoffs and looking in. Even still, the Red Wings are in much better form entering this contest and catch the Devils at the end of a tough part of their schedule.

The Red Wings are 7-2 in the last nine meetings between these teams, and 4-1 in their last five overall, while the Devils are 1-4 in their last five when playing their fourth game in six nights.

The play: Detroit +115
