Week Three Wagering – Arizona Cardinals at Washington Redskins

The Arizona Cardinals (2-0 SU & ATS) have gotten off to a very encouraging start as they try and break their playoff drought. On Sunday they will travel to our nation’s capital to play the Washington Redskins (1-1 SU & ATS) in an NFL contest that is set to take place at 1 PM ET at FedEx Field (natural turf) in Landover, MD.

Sunday, September 21

BetUS NFL betting odds: WASHINGTON -3, Total 42
NOTABLE STAT: Cardinals have averaged 2.7 yards per rush
KEY NFL FOOTBALL BETTING TREND: Arizona has lost 14 of its last 19 on road

In the BetUS NFL football betting odds, the Redskins are listed as a three-point favorite, with a posted total of 42 points.

Here are some NFL betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):

* ARIZ has won four of its last five games SU
* ARIZ has played five of its last six games OVER the total
* ARIZ has lost 14 of its last 19 road games SU
* ARIZ has played 10 of its last 13 road games OVER the total
* WASH has won and covered five of its last seven games
* WASH has won five of its last seven home games SU
* WASH has played four of its last six home games OVER the total

Also…

* WASH has covered four of the last six meetings
* WASH has won the last six meetings SU
* Six of the last nine meetings have gone UNDER the total
* WASH has won the last five meetings SU as the home team
* Four of the last six meetings in Washington have gone OVER the total

Arizona’s offense had a bit of a field day last week against Miami. Kurt Warner, who looks resurrected in a sense as the quarterback, threw for 361 yards and three TD’s, and 140 of those yards were picked up by Anquan Boldin, who caught all three of the TD passes from Warner. Toss in the 153 yards netted by Larry Fitzgerald, and 155 yards in two games from Edgerrin James, who is providing at least something of a diversion, and you have a ‘Zona attack that is capable of scoring points against just about anybody, as long as the offensive line holds up.

That’s great news for them, but there’s some encouragement in the nation’s capital as well. The Redskins, down by nine points in the fourth quarter to the Saints, came back with two touchdowns to pull out a 29-24 victory. Jason Campbell, who appeared to have some real problems adapting to Jim Zorn’s west coast offense, had a confidence-building afternoon, with 321 yards passing, and engineered 25 first downs, as his team rambled for 455 yards.

Let’s first stipulate that the challenges facing each of the offenses were not necessarily the sternest possible. Arizona was, after all, playing the Dolphins, who had long since said goodbye to Jason Taylor, who now finds himself in a Redskin uniform. And the ‘Skins made their advances against a New Orleans defense that was missing three starters. But the execution looked good with both these teams, and we know that they each have standout running backs (Clinton Portis for Washington) and speedy wide receivers.

The Cardinals have played 10 of their last 13 road games over the total. And they have also scored 30 points or better in six of their last ten games. If last week’s effort from Campbell was not a mirage, we can make a rather strong recommendation for the game moving “over” the total of 42, points, as it is posted in the BetUS NFL betting odds.
