Patriots D look to shut down Air Assault from Favre, Jets

The New England Patriots (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS), who are kind of disheartened that they have to go forward with a new quarterback, will travel to the New York metropolitan area on Sunday as they take on the New York Jets (1-0 SU & ATS), who are tickled to death about their new QB, in an NFL contest that is scheduled to kick off at 4:15 PM ET at Giants Stadium (artificial turf) in East Rutherford, NJ.

The Jets look like they’re happy and playing with confidence behind Brett Favre, but a little perspective might be in order here. One of Favre’s touchdown passes against the Dolphins was a real floater, a mini-Hail Mary if you will, that was completed in a desperate fourth-down situation because the Jets had an injured kicker. Miami had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds, and may have done so had Chad Pennington not thrown one ill-advised pass.

New England has failed to cover in its last seven attempts, but all of those were as a favorite. Here, they are the underdog, a reaction to the injury that knocked out Tom Brady for the year. Is it an over-reaction?

Well, the Pats have been one of the NFL’s best road teams, winning eleven of their last 12. They have covered 13 of the last 18 as the visitor. Matt Cassel, who has been installed as the starting quarterback, has three full years in this system, and was good enough to be drafted despite being strictly a backup to Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer at USC. Cassel has a full week of practice getting snaps with the first team. New England has won ten of the last eleven times out against this opponent, and you know that when the rest of the league smells blood, the last team they want to under-achieve against is the hated Jets.

When you go 16-0 in a season, you have a lot of things that work, not just the quarterback position. And you’re not going to convince me that enough has become dysfunctional to make this a run-of-the-mill team. Randy Moss is still on hand, as is Wes Welker. And the Pats are going to run the ball, behind the trio of Lawrence Maroney, Sammy Morris and Lamont Jordan. Don’t confuse the new England offensive line with the young, vulnerable unit in Miami. This dog WILL hunt.

We have value here – lots of it. Take the point and a half with the Patriots, the underdog in the BetUS NFL football betting odds.
