While he’s been head coach of the Patriots, Bill Belichick has won ugly, then won “pretty,” and now he’s winning ugly again. And they can occasionally make things ugly for the opposition. Take last week’s 20-10 win over Buffalo, when the Pats’ defense held the Bills to just 168 total yards and ten first down, and limited Dick Jauron’s team to only 22 minutes of possession time. Meanwhile, the Jets had things even easier, putting their game with St. Louis away with time to spare in the first half, getting things down mostly on the ground. Thomas Jones, who is posting a much better per-carry average than he did last year (4.7, as compared to 3.6 in 2007), ran for 149 yards against the Rams.

Brett Favre is probably not going to approach the yardage figure he attained with the Packers last year, but he’s completing 69%, which is the highest accuracy rate of his career. Is he capable of making it difficult for the Patriots to trade points here? Maybe, but Matt Cassel, who had 234 yards last week, has averaged 200 yards a game, and he’s almost as accurate as Favre (67%). But everyone understands that Cassel is not being asked to do as much as Tom Brady, so he’ll need a running game to help balance things. New England’s had some injuries in the backfield, and though we respect what BenJarvis Green-Ellis has been able to do (105 yards last week against Buffalo), this is a better defensive front than usual, as the Jets allow just 3.2 yards a rush.

In the season’s second game, which was also Favre’s second with the Jets, New England scored a 19-10 victory, and held New York to 12 first downs. But the yardage was pretty even, and Favre has gotten a lot more experience in this offense. Dustin Keller, the rookie tight end out of Purdue, may be ready to become a bigger part of this offense (107 yards and a TD last week). New England has won 11 of the last 12 meetings between these teams, but the visitor has covered the last six. Let’s take the points with the Jets, the three-point underdog in the BetUS NFL pro football sports betting odds.
