Shea Matthews is filling in for Lawrence Paul this week with the Week 14 NFL Power Rankings. Lawrence is currently poolside in Vegas sipping on a Virgin Chi-Chi…enjoy buddy!!!!

We billed last week as Big Game Weekend and it was just hat. Turns out, however, that it was also Big Statement Weekend. The Steelers sent the Ravens a message on Monday night and New England’s message to the New York Jets on Monday night couldn’t have been more emphatic.

It shouldn’t be hard to guess who tops the power rankings this week.

NFL Week 14 Power Rankings

  1. New England Patriots (1) –Tom Brady is playing his best football since 2007 – if not his best football ever. He now has 17 touchdown passes and zero interceptions in his last seven games.
  2. Atlanta Falcons (2) – Are they due for a huge crash or is it just their year? Another week and another late-game miracle drive saves the Falcons. Can’t remember seeing another 10-2 team scrape by in so many close games.
  3. Pittsburgh Steelers (5) – Ben Roethlisberger continues to own the Baltimore Ravens, broken nose and all. But the Steelers lost another chunk of their O-line this week when Flozell Adams went down. How many more shots can Big Ben take?
  4. New Orleans Saints (4) – The Saints are sneaking in, not marching in. Drew Brees keeps quietly leading the Saints to clutch victories. If the Falcons aren’t careful, the Saints will steal the NFC North from them.
  5. Chicago Bears (8) – What is it with these Bears? No matter how many times they win, no one seems to believe in them. They did, after all, let Drew Stanton intentionally rush for a touchdown on them. The Week 17 matchup with Green Bay should finally settle everything.
  6. Green Bay Packers (6) – The James Starks development is very interesting for Packer fans. The running game looked like Green Bay’s only weakness. If Starks can bring it down the stretch, the Pack could make waves.
  7. New York Jets (3) – Crazy how quickly our confidence in Mark Sanchez gets shaken. One Monday night meltdown and everyone leaps off the bandwagon. Including me.
  8. Philadelphia Eagles (11) – It only took one week for Philly to get right back on track. Michael Vick isn’t slowing down at all. The Eagles “D” has but should return to form when Asante Samuel comes back.
  9. New York Giants (10) – Eli Manning took a backseat against Washington but these Giants looked more like the ones we saw through the 2000s, riding a power running game and stout defense to ugly glory.
  10. Baltimore Ravens (4) – One bad half against the Ravens and Derrick Mason rips on the offense? The Falcons win lots of close games too, Derrick, and they ain’t complainin’.
  11. Kansas City Chiefs (14) – Showed last week that they could win ugly. No catches for Dwayne Bowe and the Chiefs still gut out a win over Denver thanks to their “D.” They’re a top-10 team in scoring offense and defense.
  12. San Diego Chargers (7) – And so the December streak ends for San Diego. As good as they looked going into their flop against Oakland last week, they could be done if they can’t beat Kansas City this week.
  13. Jacksonville Jaguars (16) – Is Maurice Jones-Drew making a late-season run at the MVP award? At the very least, his 133 yards/game average over his last five contests has fantasy football geeks creaming themselves.
  14. St. Louis Rams (17) – Last week against Arizona was a freebie. This week’s tough trip to New Orleans will tell us a lot more about how seriously we should take St. Louis.
  15. Indianapolis Colts (12) – Is it generous to even keep the Colts 15th? We can’t blame the slump on Peyton Manning’s receivers anymore. He’s legitimately pressing and making mistakes.
  16. Bet on Football at Sportsbook.com

  17. Oakland Raiders (18) – Maybe the Raiders’ rushing attack isn’t coming back to Earth after all? They gouged San Diego for 251 yards and three scores as a team on the ground last week.
  18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (14) – The Bucs plummet again, not just because they lost a crucial game against Atlanta but because their best defensive player, Aqib Talib, is done for the year.
  19. Dallas Cowboys (22) – America’s Spoilers strike again, this time crushing Indy’s hopes. The Cowboys are just one Week-12 Roy Williams fumble away from being 4-0 under Jason Garrett.
  20. Cleveland Browns (23) – With the Buffalo Bills and their crumbling offensive line next on the docket, the Browns could stretch their winning streak to three this week.
  21. Seattle Seahawks (21) – Being 6-6 is, in a way, hurting Seattle. Since the Seahawks aren’t out of it, they’re not handing the keys to Charlie Whitehurst to see what they have with him.
  22. Miami Dolphins (15) – The Dolphins have to stop denying it. Chad Henne is officially a bust.
  23. Minnesota Vikings (24) – Just when it finally looked like Tarvaris Jackson would get his shot…whispers are that Brett Favre will get back on the horse this week. The misery never ends.
  24. Houston Texans (20) – Hint: draft some defensive backs next year.
  25. San Francisco 49ers (28) – The Troy Smith era goes out with a whimper. Back to Alex Smith. After that, a new quarterback via the draft.
  26. Buffalo Bills (28) – Stevie Johnson goes from Pro Bowl shoo-in to milk cartons in two weeks.
  27. Tennessee Titans (19) – Still think Chris Johnson wants a long-term deal to stay aboard this sinking ship?
  28. Washington Redskins (25) – Forget Washington; will Donovan McNabb start for any NFL team next year the way he’s playing now? Arizona may be his only chance.
  29. Detroit Lions (29) – Drew Stanton looking competent against the Bears? Wow! He could be the next Shaun Hill.
  30. Denver Broncos (31) – They get a boost for at least doing something right this week: firing Josh McDaniels.
  31. Carolina Panthers (32) – At least they’re getting an extended look at Jon Stewart now. Don’t be surprised if he’s their bellcow next year.
  32. Cincinnati Bengals (30) – Jumping at the line fourth-and-2 to give the Saints a new set of downs with 34 seconds left? Vintage Bungles.
  33. Arizona Cardinals (26) – Asking John Skelton to take over this mess is kind of mean. Why not just rotate different Cardinal players through the quarterback position as punishment any time they do something wrong?
