New York Jets vs Cleveland Browns preview

Looks like it’s time for Jets fans to climb back on the bandwagon. That shutout loss to Green Bay is now in the distant past, eclipsed by a razor-thin win over the Lions in Detroit, and the New York tabloids can again start beating the drums for a Jets-Giants Super Bowl.

The Jets numbers are pretty good. Mark Sanchez, who was so erratic last season that he is blamed for not getting the team to the Super Bowl, has cut down on turnovers and would have even better numbers if his wide receivers could start hanging on to catchable balls. LaDainian Tomlinson is averaging 4.9 yards per carry and has been so impressive that expected starter Shonn Greene is having a hard time getting any touches at all. The defense that was ranked No. 1 in the league last season, is still pretty good at No. 6 this year.

The sack total (17, in the middle of the pack) is down, but you can’t have everything.

It’s all added up to a 6-2 record, and no one in the league has a better record. One of those victories was a good-as-gold Week 2 triumph over New England that gives the NYJ a leg up in the AFC East race which will probably be decided when New York faces the Pats in New England on Dec. 6.

New York has some added padding this week. The Browns expended a tremendous amount of energy and prep work to defeat the Patriots last Sunday, and the Jets should be plenty motivated when they travel to Cleveland this Sunday. Can the Browns beat (in order) the Saints, Patriots and Jets? Not too likely.

NFL Trends:

NY Jets are 6-1 SU in their last 7 games
The total has gone OVER in 6 of the NY Jets last 7 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Cleveland’s last 6 games
Cleveland is 5-2 SU in its last 7 games at home
Cleveland is 8-17 SU in its last 25 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of the NY Jets last 5 games on the road
NY Jets are 9-1 SU in their last 10 games on the road
Cleveland is 5-12 SU in its last 17 games at home

The picks: Do the Brownies have anything left in the tank after beating New England?

Will Eric Mangini, who probably has earned another contract with wins over New Orleans and New England, pull some more trick plays out of his sleeve? Trickery worked against NE’s young defense, but would it fly against the Jets’ veterans?

Betting against a three-peat here as the Jets figure to cover 3. The half-point on the total looks huge, but I’d still go long. Combined, the Browns and Jets are 11-5 on the Over.
