Detroit Lions vs. Buffalo Bills

There would be more than a little irony if the Lions were taking on a winless Bills team in Week 17, Detroit having the chance to lay one final L on Buffalo, which would then tie the cats as the only winless 0-16 teams in NFL history. As it is, Detroit can only push Buffalo 6.25 percent closer to the big donut when they play this Sunday in Buffalo. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

The Bills and their fragile fan base spend most of between-game time shaking their heads these days. Three weeks ago Buffalo had the Ravens beat nine ways from Sunday before losing in overtime on a field goal. Pretty much the same thing happened the next week in Kansas City, another 3-point OT defeat. And last Sunday the Bills actually had a lead late in the fourth quarter before the expected crash resulted in yet another 3-point loss, this one at home to the Bears.

They say what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, but you wonder how long the 0-8 Bills can keep knocking on the door without getting too frustrated. The Lions have made only incremental progress since their 0-16 season in 2008 and are just 2-6 at the turn this year, but there are signs that Detroit has things headed in the right direction.

QB Matthew Stafford appears to be the real deal, although the kid may be out for quite a while after an apparent shoulder separation suffered in last Sunday’s overtime loss to the Jets. It’s possible that the franchise cornerstone will have played in only three games this season by the time things finish up.

NFL Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 16 of Detroit’s last 24 games on the road
Detroit is 4-6-2 ATS in its last 12 games on the road
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Buffalo’s last 5 games when playing Detroit
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Detroit’s last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Detroit’s last 5 games when playing Buffalo
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Buffalo’s last 6 games
The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Buffalo’s last 15 games at home
Buffalo is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games when playing Detroit

The picks: Much depends on Stafford, and as of early this week the Lions weren’t talking about the status of an MRI performed on Monday. If the Lions are bluffing and Stafford plays, look for the Bills to bring a lot of heat.

It says here that the Bills finally get the gorilla off their backs and win, covering in the process.

Parlay players could add the under, with the needle set just north of the magic 41 that bettors keep a close eye on.
