Week one is always a bit of a challenge for sports betters as there always seems to be some absurd results; highly touted teams fall flat and overlooked teams stun opponents, making for a frantic and often hair pulling week for those with money riding on the games.

Having said that, there are some intriguing games this week that I’m excited to sink my teeth (and money) into.

Here’s five that have my attention right now.

New Orleans vs Atlanta

Week 1 Odds Saints -3

Divisional match ups in week one are always fun. No team wants to start out their season giving up a potential tie breaker with a loss to a divisional opponent, and these two NFC South foes are no different.

The Falcons and Saints have ruled over their division for the better part of the last five seasons, but with Carolina jumping into the picture last year and the Falcons falling flat, the games between Atlanta and New Orleans take on a new dynamic.

The Saints are sitting at a three point favourite heading into this Sunday afternoon tilt at the Georgia Dome.

I think Atlanta can win this one outright and will be picking them in this game. Big plays will be abound in this one but I think whoever can capitalize in the red zone wins it. Both teams are missing red zone threats as former Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez has retired and the Saints are without multi-tool running back Darren Sproles who is now wearing green in Philadelphia.

Week 1 NFL Pick: The Falcons offense still boasts QB Matt Ryan with receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White to compliment Steven Jackson in the run game and I think they get the job done in week one.

New England vs Miami

Week 1 Odds Patriots -5

Another divisional match up in week one features AFC East opponents. The toast of the division for what seems like an eternity has been the Patriots, while the Dolphins have been mired in third and fourth for years.

The Patriots are favoured by five in this one, and I don’t think they cover. Last season the Pats didn’t exactly blow the doors off in their first two divisional games of the season in weeks one and two. A narrow 23-21 win over the Bills in week one on the road came thanks to a last second Stephen Gostkowski field goal.

In week two the Pats were again saved by their kicker in a 13-10 win over the Jets when Gostkowski converted two of three field goal attempts. The Patriots didn’t score in the second half of that game.

Week 1 NFL Pick: Miami will be at home this Sunday and I think they keep this one close, losing by a field goal or a Tom Brady TD drive to edge a narrow victory as the clock is winding down.

Jacksonville vs Philadelphia

Week 1 Odds Eagles -10.5

The largest point spread of week one comes in a game featuring the Eagles at home to the Jaguars. Chip Kelly’s Eagles are favoured by 10.5 points and I really don’t see any reason they shouldn’t eclipse that.

The Eagles offense is one that can seemingly score points  at will and Jacksonville is…well there’s a good reason that they didn’t get their first win until week 10 last season. With no Maurice Jones-Drew and no real offensive standouts to speak of, this spells a long day for the Jags.

Look for Philly to get up early and keep their foot on the gas, Jacksonville simply won’t be able to keep pace with the rate that the Eagles can put points on the board.

Week 1 NFL Pick: Go with Philly who should win this one by a lot.

Minnesota vs St. Louis

Week 1 Odds Rams -3.5

Yikes. I think it’s safe to say that this game isn’t going to be catching a lot of eyes outside of the two cities whose teams are featured. Betting wise this one intrigues me though.

The Rams are a 3.5 point favourite, despite being without their starting QB Sam Bradford who will miss the season after tearing his ACL in the preseason.

The Rams will instead go with seventh year man Shaun Hill who has started just 32 times in his six years in the NFL, in time spent between San Francisco and Detroit.

The Vikes don’t have a big name QB themselves, but Matt Cassel is a capable starter and doesn’t need to be an elite QB with Adrian Peterson lining up behind him.

The addition of Greg Jennings to the receiving core last year gave the Vikings a boost through the air and tight end Kyle Rudolph, who is entering his fourth season as a pro, could be poised to establish himself as one of the best at his position in the league. Sophomore wide out Cordarrelle Patterson is a nice third target for Cassel as well.

Week 1 NFL Pick: I’m taking Minnesota in this one.

Indianapolis vs Denver

Week 1 Odds Broncos -7.5

Peyton Manning takes on his former team when the Colts come to Mile High to take on last year’s Super Bowl finalist Denver Broncos.

The last time we saw Peyton and the Broncos play in a meaningful game they were getting shelled by the Seattle Seahawks. Not to toot my own horn but I had said before that game that Seattle would blow the Broncos out.

Manning and the Broncos offense ran out of gas, but that’s last year, this is now. A full off-season to rest and recover does wonders, and I fully expect a repeat of last season’s opener when the Broncos destroyed the Ravens. The 7.5 point edge that the Broncos are getting almost seems like it’s not enough as this team is a point scoring machine at home.

Whether or not Andrew Luck can pull off a repeat performance from a season ago when the Colts beat the Broncos at Indy remains to be seen, and the Broncos are a different team at home.

Week 1 NFL Pick:I think the Broncos offense is just going to overwhelm the Colts.
