Kansas City fought hard and pushed the Pittsburgh Steelers into overtime on Monday Night Football, but they fell short in a 16-13 loss.

Cincinnati

The Bengals have a great young combination with Andy Dalton at quarterback and A.J. Green at wide receiver. Green may only be in his second year, but he is already one of the top two or three receivers in the NFL. Dalton had a terrific rookie season last year, but this year has been a little rockier.

Last week was Dalton’s best game of the season, mainly because he took care of the football so well. Cincinnati really hasn’t been able to establish any running game this year, which puts a lot more pressure on the passing game to perform. The Bengals average 24.4 points per game.

Cincinnati’s defense has been dinged up all season. The Bengals secondary used to be an area of strength, but this season it has been a weakness due to numerous injuries. Geno Atkins doesn’t get the kind of recognition he deserves, but he has turned into a real game-changer on the defensive line. Atkins already has seven sacks this year. Cincinnati has improved at pressuring the opposing quarterback, and that makes them a better defense than they were earlier this year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs played a very solid football game in Pittsburgh this past Monday and it had to be really disheartening for the team to lose another tough game. The Chiefs are now 1-8 on the season. Matt Cassel led the Chiefs to a game tying field goal in the final minutes last week, but he threw an inexcusable interception that cost them the game in overtime. Cassel has taken a lot of heat, but he clearly isn’t the only problem for this Chiefs team. Other than Jamaal Charles, it’s hard to find guys who are having a really strong season. The Chiefs offense has been very inconsistent this year.

Kansas City’s defense played very well last week, but they haven’t been very good most of the season. The Chiefs do have two very good pass rushers in Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. Linebacker Derrick Johnson is having a career year, and he leads the team with 67 tackles. The Chiefs haven’t given up a ton of yards, but opponents have had far too much success in the red zone this year. To be fair to the defense, they have also been put in a lot of bad spots by the offense and special teams.

Look for both of these defenses to continue their improved play of late. Both teams should be able to pressure the quarterback and make throwing the ball difficult. I like this to stay under the posted total.
