The Seattle Seahawks are a sexy pick to challenge for the NFL crown in 2013 and rightfully so. With one of the best (if not the best) defense in the game and an unpredictable blue collar offense there isn’t a whole lot to not like about this team. On Sunday the Hawks face a Carolina team that is certainly better than their 7-9 record from a year ago suggests.

The Panthers were a play or two away from a winning record last year – seven of their nine losses came by six points or less and the team endured a stretch of four straight losses that came by a total of 12 points.
Back to Seattle’s road woes for a second. In the last three seasons the Seahawks are 0-3 in road openers, they’re 8-16 overall on the road and they’re 1-4 in games that kick off at 10 a.m. PT. The Hawks were terrific last year except when they hit the road – 3-5 away from home and 0-2 in games that kicked off at 10 a.m. They went 0-3 if you count the loss to the Falcons in the divisional playoffs.
There is absolutely no secret that this team away from Qwest field and woes could continue Sunday.
Seattle will go up against last year’s tenth ranked defense Sunday. Linebacker John Beason returns from injury and the addition of Star Lotulelei should add up to a major test for Russell Wilson and the Seattle offense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Seattle’s defense is as advertised – strong from top-to-bottom but without Cliff Avril and Chris Clemons is coming off ACL surgery – Seattle is not without their question marks on defense. Cam Newton is still one of the most gifted QBs in the game and will be out to prove his doubters wrong. I wouldn’t necessarily say that Carolina has the advantage but they are certainly in a good spot to stage the upset.

The Seahawks won this matchup in Carolina 16-12 last season but that game started at 4 ET, not the dreaded 1 PM ET. Carolina is a much better team than their overall record last year – they won six of their last eight games.
At home, Seattle would be a lock in this game but on the road, Carolina’s defense plays well and the Panthers offense does enough. Seattle will be among the elite teams this year but the adversity starts Sunday!
