Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers Preview

You would not think that the game between the 4-8 49ers and 6-6 Seahawks would have playoff implications, but it does in the weak NFC West. Even at 4 games under .500 San Francisco is not out of the playoff picture, as they only trail Seattle, who is in 1st place in the division tied with the Rams, by 2 games. NFL lines have the 49ers as 5.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 41.5.

In their last games the 49ers lost to the Green Bay Packers 34-16 while the Seahawks beat the Carolina Panthers 31-14.

There is a good chance that the Seahawks can take sole possession of 1st place with a win this Sunday, as the Rams are in the Big Easy facing the red-hot Saints, who have won 5 straight.

Even though they lost last week the 49ers have won 3 of their last 5 games. However, even though he is not injured QB Troy Smith, who was the starter in those 3 wins, will not start and Alex Smith will get the nod. Head coach Mike Singletary stated, “With the games we have left, it’s about being able to use the entire playbook. Troy has been working his tail off to get everything in, but there’s not enough time in the day. I think right now we need everything that we possibly have. Alex Smith will give us the opportunity to do that.” Yeah, that makes sense to go with Alex Smith, who is 1-6 as a starter while Troy Smith is 3-2.

The Seahawks had rushed for a grand total of 284 yards in their previous 5 games before last week’s win where their rushing offense showed some life and had 161 yards. However, that was a against a weak Carolina defense while the 49ers have a legit rushing defense ranking 10th in the league. If the Seattle RB duo of Justin Forsett and Marshawn Lynch can pick up some rushing yards it will take a ton of pressure off QB Matt Hasselbeck. Football betting

In the win over Carolina Hasselbeck did pass for 229 yards, but he did not throw a TD and he was picked off twice. The WR situation for this game is up in the air right now, as both Mike Williams and Ben Obomanu are questionable for Sunday. Head coach Pete Carroll is hoping they can go and they may need them against San Francisco and their 18th ranked pass defense. Last week the 49ers’ secondary was torched by Green Bay to the tune of 274 passing yards.

Alex Smith has 9 TD and 9 INT this season, but before his 5 game hiatus he had not been picked off in his last 2 games. He has TE Vernon Davis and WR Michael Crabtree and he will be facing a Seattle pass defense that ranks 30th in the league.

Things looked OK for at least one week with Frank Gore out with a season-ending injury, as Brian Westbrook rushed for 136 yards a couple weeks back. However, last week he only rushed for 31 yards on 9 carries. The Seahawks only rank 21st in rushing defense and if Westbrook and fellow back Anthony Dixon cannot help Smith out San Francisco may be in trouble.

Even though the 49ers are at home the Seahawks have won 5 of their last 7 games in San Francisco.

Seattle ran the ball well last week, but they will not do so in this game. The 49ers’ D will step up will play well and they will get some revenge against the Seahawks, who crushed them in week 1. Singletary will look like a genius, as Smith will have a good game, Alex not Troy, and the 49ers will win this game and cover the 5.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

This season the Seahawks are 4-8 ATS and the Seahawks 6-6 ATS.
The Seahawks have covered the spread 5 times in their last 7 games against the 49ers and the underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 games between the 2.

I would stay away from the O/U and even though the Seahawks have an Over record of 5-0 in their last 5 games the 49ers have an Under record of 7-3 in their last 10 home games.

Pick: 49ers -5.5
