On Sunday afternoon in the Great Northwest the Seattle Seahawks host the San Francisco 49ers. NFL betting lines have the 49ers as the slight favorite in this game and San Francisco is also favored to win the weak NFC East.

The Seahawks are a big wild card in the division, as they have talent, but have beset by injuries the last couple of years. Pete Carroll is now the man in charge in Seattle and he is back in the NFL after an 11 -year absence. The Seahawks have gone 9-23 in the past 2 seasons after making the playoffs 5 years in a row including an appearance in the Super Bowl.

Seattle has not had the best off-season, as last year’s leading WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh was released, former Pro Bowl defender Patrick Kerney retired and Lawrence Jackson, who led the team in sacks last season, was traded to Detroit.

Seattle not only lost players to other teams, but they also will be without LB Leroy Hill for the San Francisco game duo to a 1-game suspension and 6th overall draft pick LT Russell Okung is out with a sprained ankle.

San Francisco has made positive strides in the past few seasons and this season they look to make the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.

The 49ers went 4-0 in the pre-season while the Seahawks went 1-3. Last season these 2 teams split the 2 games they played. Football betting

QB Matt Hasselbeck leads Seattle and even though he has dealt with injuries the last 2 seasons and is 35 he is coming off a 3,000 yards season. However, he did throw 17 INT, which was the most in his career.

Justin Forsett is the starter at RB, but the Seahawks also have the duo of Julius Jones and Leon Washington. These 3 have to pick up some yards against a 49ers’ run defense that ranked 6th in the league last season and will likely be solid this year.

Since Seattle lost their top 2 WR’s from last season they are hoping rookie Golden Tate, reclamation project Mike Williams, and Deion Branch can give Hesselbeck some solid targets.

With Russell Okung out the offensive line may struggle in this game, especially since the 49ers pass rush is great led by LB Patrick Willis, who led the NFL last season in sacks. If the Seattle offensive line cannot keep the 49ers off Hasselbeck the Seahawks may be in for a long game.

While the 49ers are awesome up front on defense their weakness is the secondary. Last season San Francisco allowed more than 300 passing yards 7 times. The unit had a few injuries and this season they will have to stay healthy and if they do they will be much improved. They will have to have solid coverage on the Seattle receivers and not let them make the big play down the field.

The question mark for the 49ers offense is QB Alex Smith. Will he be the QB that had a resurgence last season with a career high 18 TD or the one that was a draft bust for his first few years in the Bay Area. Luckily, he has a lot of weapons on offense mainly Pro Bowl TE Vernon Davis and RB Frank Gore. 2009’s first round pick WR Michael Crabtree also came on strong after signing during the season and he finished the year with 48 catches for 625 yards and 2 TD’s in 11 games.

Seattle’s defense ranked 24th in the league last season and while they were decent they were horrid defending the pass giving up 245.4 yards per game in the air. The Seahawks’ secondary may be much better now with first round pick S Earl Thomas and a healthy CB Marcus Trufant.

The LB unit is the strength of Seattle led by Lofa Tatupu and Aaron Curry. The 49ers offensive line has a tall task in this game to protect Smith and open up holes for the rushing attack. San Francisco had trouble with the line last season, which is why they used their 2 first round picks to take OT Anthony Davis and G Mike Iupati.

The Seahawks still have many issues and a couple of starters that will not play in this game, while the 49ers have high expectations. San Francisco will show they are a legit playoff contender, as they will win this game and cover the spread.

Pick: 49ers -3

He is anxiously waiting for the first NFL week when his beloved new-look Redskins take on the Cowboys, who is a team Jason has no love for, to say the least.
