San Francisco 49ers vs. Carolina Panthers Preview

This Sunday the winless Carolina Panthers (0-5) host the San Francisco 49ers (1-5), who may have saved their season with their first win last week. They still have a long road to hoe, but the 49ers are not out of the wide-open NFC West race. NFL lines have San Francisco as 3-point favorites in this game with a total of 35.5.

In the first 2 games of the season for Carolina QB Matt More struggled and was benched. His replacement was rookie Jimmy Clausen and he has struggled and Moore is now the starter again. He will be taking the reigns of a Panthers’ offense that ranks last in the league in points per game, passing yards per game, and 20th in rushing yards per game. He will try to jump start a weak offense that only picked up a grand total of 147 yards in their last game against Chicago.

49ers’ QB Alex Smith was on the hot season big time, but he was key in last week’s win over Oakland with 2 second half TD’s and for the first game he was not picked off.

The one bright spot for the Panthers has been their 6th ranked defense, but while they have been one on the best in the league defending the pass they have been terrible defending the run, which is not good facing San Francisco RB Frank Gore this Sunday.

In their last games the 49ers beat the Oakland Raiders 17-9 and the Panthers lost to the Chicago Bears 23-6 a couple weeks back and last week had a bye. Football betting

Not only are these 2 teams losing, but also they are also not covering spread, as the 49ers are 2-4 ATS and the Panthers are 1-4 ATS. In looking at a few key betting trends for this game may point to the Panthers covering the spread, as they are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog and the 49ers are 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 games as a road favorite and are 1-3-1 ATS against teams with a losing record. Also, the 49ers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games in Carolina.

Smith will be facing a the strength of the Carolina D, which is their pass defense that is only giving up 182.4 passing yards per game. In the win over Oakland last week Smith had 196 yards and 2 TD. He only averaged 5.9 yards per completion and look for him to not take many shots down the field in this game with his INT problems this season.

The 49ers only rank 28th in the league in rushing yards per game, but Frank Gore has been solid ranking 8th in rushing yards and he has also caught 33 balls for 284 yards with 2 TD. He will be the main concern of the Panthers’ defense, which has struggled and only ranks 26th in opponents’ rushing yards per game. If the Panthers cannot contain Gore they will be in big trouble, especially if their offense cannot move the chains.

Since the Panthers rank dead last in passing yards per game they will have to get a good game from RB DeAngelo Williams, who really struggled in the last game against Chicago only rushing for 51 yards averaging 2.7 yards per carry. He and fellow RB Jonathan Stewart will likely have to carry the offensive load this Sunday.

The San Francisco D was solid last season, but they have only been mediocre this season both against the pass and the run. However, last week their run defense played pretty good holding the strong rushing attack of the Raiders in check to the tune of only 110 yards.

Betting Trends

San Francisco is 7-1-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a ATS loss, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite, and has an Under record of 4-1-1 in their last 6 road games.
Carolina is 2-7 ATS in their last 9 home games against teams with a losing road record and has an Under record of 4-0 in their last 4 games.

Pick: The 49ers will come out and run the ball and run it well in this game, as they will take the confidence from last week’s win and double their win total by beating the Panthers and they will also cover the 3-point spread.
