San Diego Chargers vs. St. Louis Rams Preview

This Sunday in a non-conference match up between a couple of teams coming off tough losses the St. Louis Rams (2-3) host the San Diego Chargers (2-3). NFL lines have the Chargers as 8.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 45.

Big shocker, the Chargers are off to another slow start, as this is the 3rd season in a row they have began the season 2-3. However, now is the time they usually start to play well. They have not been killed in their 3 losses, as they were all pretty close, but turnovers deep in opponents’ territory has killed them as has their special teams’ play. Last week in the loss to Oakland they had 2 punts blocked in the first quarter and they fumbled the ball 3 times.

The Chargers still have the league’s top offense, but they have to stop making mistakes to get back in the AFC West race.

This season all 3 losses for the Chargers have been on the road while the Rams are 2-1 at home and have won 2 straight in the Edward Jones Dome.

The Rams had a lot of confidence going into last week’s game against the winless Lions winning 2 games in a row, but they got their clocks cleaned by Detroit losing by 38 points. Football betting

Rams’ rookie QB Sam Bradford recently lost his main target in WR Mark Clayton, who tore his patellar tendon last week and someone for the Rams needs to step up and be the #1 guy.

This season both the Rams and the Chargers are 3-2 ATS.

The Rams were lit up for 44 points last week by the Lions and the Chargers have a dynamic offense and are a 8.5-point favorites in this game. However, in some interesting betting trends San Diego is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as a road favorite and St. Louis is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss.

On their last games the Rams were crushed 44-6 by the Detroit Lions and the Chargers lost to the Oakland Raiders 35-27.

QB Phillip Rivers leads the Chargers and their top-ranked passing offense and this season he leads the league in passing yards and is tied with Peyton Manning for the most TD’s. WR Malcom Floyd and TE Antonio Gates each almost have 500 receiving yards already and they may really add to their totals in this game facing a Rams’ secondary that is giving up an average of 231.2 passing yards per game.

The rushing offense for the Chargers ranks 12th in the league in yards per game and it is important San Diego runs the ball, as when they do they win and when they do not they lose. The Chargers have averaged 165.5 rushing yards in their 2 wins and only 96.3 rushing yards in their losses.

The Rams may rely heavily on RB Steven Jackson (398 yards 1 TD) in this game with Bradford missing his main target. The Chargers’ run defense has been solid this season only giving up an average of 86.4 yards per game, but if Jackson can have a good game it will really be a HUGE advantage not only on offense, but keeping the San Diego offense on the sidelines by eating up the clock.

The Rams have not faced one team this season that ranks in the top 10 on offense and last week gave up 44 points and this week face the league’s best offense. I think Bradford will struggle for a 2nd straight week and Rivers will have a big game turning the Chargers season around yet again. I am taking the Chargers in the game to cover the 8.5-point spread and I think the Over is also a good pick.

Betting Trends

San Diego is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a loss and have an Over record of 4-0 in their last 4 games.
St. Louis is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog of 3.5-10, have an Under record of 6-2 in their last 8 games, and an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 home games.

Pick: Chargers -8.5 and the Over
