To wrap up their preseason schedules, the Chargers and Niners are set to play a Thursday night game in the Bay area. The Chargers enter this contest with a preseason record of 2-1, while the 49ers are on the opposite end of the scale at 1-2.

San Diego

At 2-1 at this point in the process, San Diego is coming off a loss in Week 3 of the preseason to the Seattle Seahawks.

Philip Rivers will be out in Week 4, meaning San Diego will look to reserve quarterbacks Brad Sorensen and Kellen Clemens against the 49ers. Those two completed 50 percent of their passes for one TD the most recent game against the Super Bowl-runner up Seahawks.

In the backfield, tailback Javontee Herndon has displayed some versatility during this early slate. He could prove to be a crucial part of the Chargers’ offense, and maybe more importantly, the team’s success could rely on how well he’s able to play.

On the other side of the ball, Nick Dzubnar led the Chargers in their Week 3 contest with six tackles. Kyle Emanuel also had a sack, as the team held Seattle to just 16 points in its 16-15 loss last week.

San Francisco

San Francisco is 1-2 at this point in the process and is coming off a Week 3 loss to the Denver Broncos that saw them fall by seven points, 19-12.

Colin Kaepernick is getting read for the actual Week 1 regular-season opener, and that will result in a decent amount of Blaine Gabbert and Dylan Thompson at quarterback in the final week of preseason play.

Gabbert put together an impressive 9-of-11 passes for 96 yards last week.

On the defensive side of the football, NaVorro Bowman led the Niners last week with nine tackles.

4* NFL Betting Pick: San Diego +3

Picking the 49ers to win this contest in a presumed battle of backup quarterbacks is a tough one. San Diego covering the spread seems safer, and even pulling out a win on the road if you trust Gabbert will have another efficient showing.
