Giants vs Jets preview

The NFL preseason has given us plenty to discuss in its first week, with injuries, standout performances and even sudden retirements (really, Glen Coffee?) popping up left and right. Will the Giants and Jets keep the trend going as Monday Night Football kicks off its preseason schedule?

The one-point line should come as no surprise to bettors. The preseason is a crapshoot – especially when Jets and the Giants share New Meadowlands Stadium. All we can do is have a look at the different camp stories and use them to determine which important players will get their reps in on Monday night.

For the Giants, the preseason is about getting healthy. Receivers Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith and Mario Manningham are all nursing minor injuries; it would make sense if none of them played a single snap against the Jets. Instead, the Giants will give speedy Sinorice Moss and project tight end Bear Pascoe plenty of time.

What about the Ahmad Bradshaw/Brandon Jacobs battle in the backfield? Both runners struggled to stay healthy last season. But whereas the Giants are handling Jacobs with kid gloves, Bradshaw seems determined to break himself in, practicing twice daily.

The real guy to watch, though, may be the forgotten Giants running back: Andre Brown. He didn’t play a game as a rookie after rupturing his Achilles’ tendon last year. You can bet he’s anxious to show what he can do on the national stage.

As much as Rex Ryan likes to hype up LaDainian Tomlinson, there are no major offensive battle fronts for the New York Jets; Shonn Greene is the unquestioned starting tailback, But the Jets may have a revolving door of different defensive backs getting looks on Monday.

Kyle Wilson is getting an extended shot to be holdout Darrelle Revis’ replacement at corner and the Jets haven’t named a starting free safety yet either, with both Eric Smith and Brodney Pool contending for the job.

Look for the Jets’ pass defense to stand out – but also for the Giants to pave some major roads with their running game in what should be a fairly smashmouth affair by preseason standards.
