I don’t know how all the tiebreakers work but on the surface it looks like they still have a chance to grab the #2 seed in the conference.
Last week Jacksonville let a win slip through their fingers against Tennessee so it would not surprise if they do not have much in the emotional tank for this game, their final one of the year. Being on the road won’t help either.
The Jags are not terrible but you have to think they will be just phoning in the effort for this one.
They have nothing to prove or gain and I don’t think there is enough rivalry between these two squads the way there will be between other divisional games that will close the season this week.
Jacksonville is going to be without top receiver Cecil Shorts again and I am not sure how much we will see of difference maker running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who has been banged up all season long and just worked his way into the lineup last week.
The last time these two teams squared off it was all Colts in a 37-3 beatdown, which wound up being their worst loss of the season.
If the Colts get up early in this one they might play it safe to avoid injury so this one could be a lot closer, more of the 27-10 variety, than an embarrassing slaughter.
The Colts were pretty impressive last week in beating Kansas City, a matchup we could certainly see in the not so distant future.
If they meet again they need to tighten up their run defense to so that RB Jamaal Charles does not tear them up again but on the positive they forced Chiefs QB Alex Smith into two interceptions for only the second time all season long.
In fact the defense has given up only 10 points over back to back victories over the Chiefs and lowly Texans, offering some hope that QB Andrew Luck might not have to do it all by himself in the playoffs with this year’s team.
If that is actually the case than the Colts chances have certainly risen quite a bit over the close of the season…but only time will tell.
As for this game there are gains to be made but if it looks like a victory is just not in the cards early they could certainly shut it down in response.
I just don’t expect that to be the case.
