Both teams will look to end what has been a miserable season on a positive note. For the Giants it was a 0-6 start that sunk them. For the Skins it has been a seven game losing streak to close out the year that has been their demise.

Despite ugly records the G-Men and the Redskins each have something to play for – their respective coaches are definitely on boiling-hot seats as we head into the offseason.

The Washington Redskins essentially mailed it in when they decided to “bench” Robert Griffin II for the remainder of the season – curious call trying to protect a guy that was injured from the outset. The Skins will go with Kirk Cousins for the third straight time – he has been hot and he has been cold against two pretty bad defenses thus far.

Cousins threw for 381 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in a 27-26 loss at Atlanta on Dec. 15 but completed just 21 of 36 passes for 197 yards, one touchdown and one interception last time out against Dallas’s hideous defense.

Cousins will have Pierre Garcon who has 107 catches on the year to throw to and he will have the talented but underwhelming Alfred Morris who had 88 yards and a TD last week at his disposal but against an OK Giants defense the Washington offense that ranks 15th in passing offense with 239.4 yards per game, best guess is that they struggle in the finale.

We can’t expect Washington’s defense to help a whole lot either. The defense is allowing 249.3 passing yards per game, 22nd in the league, and 109.8 rushing yards per game, 14th in the league – better numbers than they actually are. This unit has been awful all season long.

The New York Giants’ magical December run simply didn’t materialize this year. We can point to a lot of reasons – a 0-6 start, the lack of a solid and consistent running game or Eli Manning’s league worst 26 interceptions are just a few. But the fact remains that the Giants have won six of their last nine games and they are coming off a win over a pretty good Detroit team last week.

It is unclear as to who will start at running back – both Andre Brown and Peyton Hillis exited last week’s game with concussions – and Victor Cruz will sit out his second straight game as well. The Giants struggling offense will be without some weapons and will need others to step up. How about Hakeem Nicks? How about Ruben Randel? How about Eli Manning himself?

Offensively, New York is averaging 228.8 passing yards per game, 17th in the league, and only 80.7 rushing yards per game, which ranks second to last in the league.

The Giants have been OK on defense this year. They gave up 355 total yards but they forced 3 turnovers against the Lions. On the year, the defense is giving up 227.5 passing yards per game and 110.1 rushing yards per contest, which rank 13th and 15th in the league – not too bad considering where this team is in the standings.

Week 17 Football Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:
• WAS are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games in December.
• WAS are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 vs. NFC.
• WAS are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games on fieldturf.
• NYG are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games in Week 17.
• Over is 10-3 in NYG last 13 games in Week 17.
• NYG are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 vs. NFC.
• Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings in New York.

The Redskins are a mess – one game away from finishing last in the NFL standings and awarding the first overall pick in the NFL draft to the St. Louis Rams thanks to Robert Griffin. Mike Shanahan has lost the room, lost the confidence of his owner and most of all – he has lost his way this entire season. Washington is bad – the Giants are OK. Take the home team to put another nail in Mike Shanahan’s coffin Sunday and the battle of the pride goes to Eli and the Giants.

Pick: New York Giants -3 1/2
