How Can San Diego Win?

Let Philip Rivers go to work. Rivers is one of the leading MVP candidates in the NFL this year and he’s on pace to break Dan Marino’s single-season passing record. More importantly, he’ll be getting one of his best weapons back.

While it looks like Antonio Gates will be out this week, receiver Vincent Jackson is back after a lengthy time on the sidelines (contract dispute). The Chargers passing game has been outstanding without him and should be even better with him.

The Chargers are just rolling right now. They believe they can win against anyone, anywhere. They are on a short week but when a team is playing this well, that might not be the worst thing.

The biggest difference in this game is the health of both teams. The Colts have a slew of injuries, which includes Austin Collie, Bob Sanders, Clint Session, Gary Brackett, Joseph Addai, Justin Tryon and Brody Eldrige. Most of those players likely won’t play, which is tough to overcome in a matchup of two fairly equal teams otherwise.

How Can Indianapolis Win?

Peyton Manning will once again have to carry the Indianapolis Colts to victory and that’s always a good plan.

Yes, there are tons of injuries virtually everywhere on the roster but as long as Manning is healthy, the Colts have a pretty good chance.

It starts with the basics: Manning, Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon. Wayne has been seeing a steady dose of double-coverage this year so it’s up to Garcon to distract some of that attention away and make some big plays. Blair White has worked the slot well in the last two games, reeling in two touchdowns last week, and he needs to have a good game as well. The Colts are tough to stop on offense when they have a reliable tight end or slot receiver playing at a high level.

The Chargers rely heavily on their passing game – and Rivers – as the run just hasn’t been there for them this year. That could be a problem on the road. The good news is the Colts have the eighth-ranked pass defense and two closers in defensive end Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney, who’ll pin their ears back and try to get Rivers on his back.

Outlook

The Chargers and Colts are two evenly matched teams but the Colts injuries will make a difference. San Diego has picked up the pace in the last three weeks whereas the Colts are struggling right now. Very quietly, they have lost two of three and nearly lost at home to Cincinnati.

Stick with the Chargers, especially as an underdog. They should cover and probably win this game outright.

Pick: Chargers +3
