Week 6 NFL Spreads: Giants vs. Saints

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Week 6 Sunday football NFL clash between the NFC’s N.Y. Giants and the New Orleans Saints…

NFL Week 6 – N.Y. Giants vs. New Orleans Saints

You might think that the Saints would have a huge advantage over the Giants this Sunday. New Orleans is coming off its bye week and has had 14 days to get ready. But the Giants last Sunday had the closest thing to a bye week –– a home game against Oakland –– and should be well-rested when the two unbeatens meet in New Orleans in the biggest game of the NFL season to date.

Actually, the Giants’ schedule leading up to the Saints game has featured one JV team after another. The combined won-loss record of New York’s five opponents is 6-10, and you’d think that New York (5-0) would finally welcome playing a game against a team that won’t be in the running for the top overall pick in next April’s college draft.

They’ll get that, and more, against New Orleans (4-0). Drew Brees got off to a fiery start and still is the early front-runner for MVP even though he’s gone a couple of games without a touchdown pass. The Saints are scoring 38 points a game, on a pace that would obliterate the NFL’s single-season scoring record somewhere around Week 16. He has all the weapons he needs –– a strong running game, excellent wideouts and an offensive line that kept Brees off the ground for 60 minutes in their Week 4 signature victory over the Jets.

This is easily the most important game to be played in the Big Easy since the 2006 Saints made their unlikely run to the NFC Championship game by beating Philadelphia at home (they lost in Chicago the next week). It also marks the first game in New Orleans for Louisiana native and NY quarterback Eli Manning. Manning was slated to play in the Superdome in 2005, but Hurricane Katrina had other ideas.

Manning will be looking across scrimmage at a defense much improved from the one that gave up 25 points a game last season as the Saints limped to an 8-8 record that was good for last place in the NFC South. Coordinator Gregg Williams has instilled aggressiveness in the troops, and New Orleans is now ranked 6th in the league (it would be higher if Washington were not playing a strong of terrible teams with no offenses). Anchored by a front 7 that has yielded only 84 yards a game on the ground, NO has given up only 16.5 points a game. Heady stuff.

New York will see that and raise with the league’s No. 1 defense, plus an offensive line that is also among the best. The running game with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw is still the Giants’ bread and butter, but wideouts Mario Manningham and Steve Smith have made great progress and no one thinks too much any more about how the loss of Plaxico Burress late last season facilitated the team’s December-January collapse.

Calling this game crucial would be greatly exaggerating its importance, but the winner can claim –– along with Minnesota –– the high ground in an NFC that appears greatly improved this season.

Both these teams are playing great on both sides of the ball. The key to this game will be the play of Eli Manning. he has yet to have to win a close game this season. If the Saints can keep the pressure on him, they will force a couple of turnovers. I like the Saints in a close one.
