Thursday night the Bucs host a Carolina team that has quietly won three of their last four games and could go over the .500 mark for the first time since the end of the 2008 season.

The Carolina Panthers have won back-to-back games ahead of their Thursday night showdown and QB Cam Newton is a huge reason why. He was very efficient against St. Louis and Minnesota, completing 35-of-43 passes for four touchdowns and zero interceptions while posting passer ratings of 136.3 and 143.4, respectively.

Newton has benefitted from the resurgence of Steve Smith, the solid play of Greg Olsen and the secondary receiving threat of Brandon LaFell. Also, Newton has five TD passes and zero interceptions with four rushing scores in his last three versus the Buccaneers. DeAngelo Williams has played well out of the backfield as well which certainly helps.

Defensively Carolina has been terrific specifically in the last four games allowing an average of 243 total yards over the past four games and yielding one TD in each of the past two. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

First round pick Defensive Tackles Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short have exceeded expectations allowing for the resurgence of Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy. Carolina has returned to the tough defensive squad that characterized this team – they definitely aren`t much fun to play against!

Where do I start with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? They are 0-6 on the year but a closer look at their games reveals that they have actually been close to victory a number of times – three of Tampa Bay’s losses have come by a combined six points. That said it is hard to ignore the apparent dysfunction that has followed this team into every week of the season thus far.

As mentioned, the Bucs will be forced to play without perhaps their biggest offensive threat Doug Martin and they will go with Mike Glennon at QB again. Glennon hasn`t been horrible this year but he hasn`t exactly been lighting the league on fire.

A good sign for Glennon is that he has been able to find his meal ticket – Vincent Jackson has 19 receptions for 252 yards and four TDs in the past two games.

Thursday Night Football Betting Prediction

:

A few trends to consider:

• CAR are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 vs. NFC.
• CAR are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games.
• CAR are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
• Under is 8-2 in TB last 10 games overall.
• Under is 7-2 in TB last 9 vs. NFC.
• TB are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 vs. NFC.
• Favorite is 9-2 ATS in their last 11 meetings.
• Over is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings in Tampa Bay.

Tampa beat Carolina twice last year and averaged 150 yards rushing per game in those wins – that won’t happen with Doug Martin out of the lineup! Carolina, on paper, is better in every aspect of this game. Carolina has been efficient and effective offensively as of late while the defense is elevating to nearly elite status.

With zero running game in Tampa expect Carolina’s D to dominate and for Cam to continue to do his thing. Thursday night looks like a 23-10 game.

Pick: Carolina Panthers -6
