Jets Try for Improbable 20-0 Start – At Patriots on Thursday Night

The New York Jets and New England Patriots meet on Thursday both coming off opening weeks wins but with different tastes in their mouths. For the Jets a win against Tampa Bay was met with utter jubilation while a win in Week 1 for New England over Buffalo came with a sense of dissatisfaction.

All eyes will be on the quarterbacks as per usual in the AFC East matchup but for once people will be focused on the good play of the Jets signal caller rather than the gong show that the position has represented the last few years.

Geno Smith has brought a sense of optimism to the New York Jets. It appears as though New York is finally ready to officially pull the plug on the Mark Sanchez experiment. Smith wasn’t spectacular in Week 1 but he did go 24 for 38 for 256 yards and had a fumble and interception along the way.

Smith didn’t get a whole lot of help in Week 1 – he led the team in rushing (the others were abysmal) and the supposed #1 receiver Santonio Holmes gained just 13 yards on one catch. It’s true that Buccaneer penalties helped the Jets win their Week 1 game but a win is a win and momentum is momentum.

New York’s defense which was a glaring weakness last year vowed to be better under Rex Ryan and they certainly were in Week 1 allowing just 250 yards to the Buccaneers. They held Doug Martin completely in check – not easy to do. Defense will likely have to be the strength of the Jets to have any chance at being competitive this year and Week 1 was a terrific start.

The New England Patriots were a tad underwhelming in Week 1 but when it counted most Tom Brady did his thing and guided his team to the winning field goal. Some bad news coming out of that game is Shane Vereen who gained over 100 yards in Week 1 and recorded another 58 yards receiving will be out a couple of weeks after breaking his wrist. The Pats have to hope that Stevan Ridley will get over his fumblitis – he will get a ton of work with Vereen out of the lineup. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Some good news out of Week 1 is the fact that Danny Amendola seems to have slipped into Wes Welker’s position quite nicely – 10 catches for 104 yards. He tweaked his groin in that and is unlikely to play Thursday leaving Brady without another weapon. Brady completed just 56% of his throws in the win last week – I can’t see that happening again despite having a bunch of no-names to throw too. Brady and company may appear to lack their typical explosiveness but this offense is almost completely retooled and without the tight ends that made them one of the offensive elite. One common threat is Tom Terrific – he always finds a way and should continue to do so Thursday night against his hated rival Jets.

A few trends to consider:

• Over is 13-6 in NYJ last 19 vs. AFC East.
• Over is 7-2 in NE last 9 home games.
• Over is 16-5 in NE last 21 vs. AFC East.
• Over is 8-3 in NE last 11 games in September.
• Over is 7-0-1 in the last 8 meetings.
• Road team is 21-8-1 ATS in their last 30 meetings.

You gotta love the Jets/Pats rivalry although it hasn’t been much of a rivalry as of late. In fact the Pats have won the last four meetings by an average of 16 points! That said the Pats had their issues with a rookie QB last week and get one cut from the same mold this week. While I like the Pats to win this game, I see it being a whole lot closer than Vegas expects. Home favorites over a touchdown the first 13 weeks of the season are just 55-70 ATS the past four years – that trend continues on Thursday night.

Pick: New York Jets to cover the 13 points
