NFL football bettors, meet the your NFC favorite: the New York Giants.

On paper they might be the pick, but they will be far from it when the games are played out on grass.

The Giants have a good roster but their recent losses can’t be underrated. On defense, many people forget how inept the Giants were before the arrival of coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and now that he’s gone, they won’t necessarily be as good – even if they have added good parts.

There’s no question that they have the best defensive line in football. Osi Umenyiora is back after a season-long injury, Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka are among the best young ends in the league while Chris Canty is an excellent free agent addition.

Outside of cornerback, there isn’t much to nitpick with this defense but the loss of Spagnuolo is one that can’t be underrated. Just take a look at the Jacksonville Jaguars defense last year after Mike Smith left to coach Atlanta.

On offense, the Giants bread and butter will be their ground game but one has to wonder if that will be enough. This is a team that faded down the stretch without Plaxico Burress, losing three of their last four games, and when you add up all of their offensive losses over the last few years, one has to assume that they simply won’t be as effective.

Including Jeremy Shockey, the Giants have now subtracted him, Burress and Amani Toomer from their offense and haven’t injected any replacements that are of the same caliber. Shockey was inconsistent, Burress was an off-the-field nightmare and Toomer has grayed, and while cutting ties with these players is one thing, not replacing them is another.

Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon, the two starting wideouts this year, are good possession but not much more. Hakeem Nicks is a rookie and Sinorice Moss hasn’t developed. At tight end, Kevin Boss isn’t much more than a plugger.

The lines of scrimmages are very strong on this team but with Spagnuolo gone on defense and the offense lacking receiving threats, the Giants can’t be considered a Super Bowl threat any longer. And in the AFC East, a slight deterioration could land them at the back of the pack.

The mood this year is completely different. The press is quiet, there are no more distractions and the team is simply ready to play football.

You can not under estimate the loss of Plaxico Burress not only to the Ginats’ offense but the entire team. He single handedly won games they should have lost. The pressure will be on Eli Manning to help fill this void, and not all that sure he is up to the task.

Burress missing will and has exposed Eli’s shortcomings at QB and the Giants one dimensional offense is in trouble. The defense may be the best in the league when healthy but they aren’t and they will struggle to stay ahead of the Eagles in the division. Brandon Marshall could help this team immensely but they spent all the $$ on Eli and the D. 2nd in the East

In a competitive division, you are gonna have to score some points. I just don’t see where those points are gonna come from. A great D with a new coordinator equals a unit in transition. The will be in some tight games but Eli’s 200 yds. and 1 td. per game aint gonna get it done. I like Phili and Dallas to finish ahead of the Giants.
