New Orleans Saints vs. Detroit Lions Preview

On the season the Saints are 1-4 ATS and they have an O/U record of 4-1 and the Lions are 4-2 ATS and they have an O/U record of 1-5.

This season the Lions are 2-1 at home and the Saints are 0-3 on the road.

In their last games the Saints beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 37-31 and the Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings 17-3.

When you look at each of these teams you have say what is up? The Saints are under .500 after 5 games and they are winless on the road. For the Lions you think of Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson and the dynamic offense, but the reason Detroit is over .500 is that their have the league’s top-ranked pass defense and 2nd ranked run defense.

While the Saints are under .500 and the road betting underdog in this game they have won 2 of their last 3 games and are coming off a bye week. Still, their only wins of the season have come against eh Vikings and the Bucs, who are both under .500, and the New Orleans defense has really struggled this season.

Stafford is putting up decent numbers, but not big ones as usual, and star WR Calvin Johnson may miss another game due to an ankle injury. At least the Lions still have Golden Tate, who leads the team in receptions and receiving yards. The Saints pass defense only ranks 25th in the league and even facing the weak Bucs last week they gave up nearly 250 yards in the air.

After Reggie Bush had a good season last year the Lions had hope for their run game. However, that has not been the case as Bush and Joique Bell only lead a Detroit rushing offense that ranks 29th in the league. Both of these RB’s are averaging under 4 yards per carry on the season. The Saints run defense ranks 16th in the league and they stuffed the run in their win over Tampa Bay last week.

Like Stafford New Orleans QB Drew Brees had not been putting up big numbers, but did so in the Tampa game passing for 371 yards. TE Jimmy Graham has played well and rookie WR Brandin Cooks has as well. Not only will Brees deal with a legit Detroit secondary, but the Lions have the most sacks in the NFL.

The Saints have been running the ball well and they rushed for 140 yards in their last game. Khiry Robinson rushed for nearly 90 yards in the Tampa game and he is averaging a solid 5 yards per carry. He will get his chances, as the Lions’ defense will be concentrating on keeping Brees from tearing them apart.

* New Orleans is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
* New Orleans is 2-9 ATS in their last 11 road games.

4* Cappers NFL Free Pick

Tough call in this one, but I think Brees will have a good game and the Saints will at least cover the spread.
