The San Francisco 49ers will be looking to make up a little ground on the idle Seattle Seahawks this week when they travel to Landover Maryland to take on Robert Griffin and the Washington Redskins. It is a battle of two of the most hyped up and coming young QBs in the game – too bad neither is in peak form ahead of Monday’s contest.

The Niners have been a tad disappointing the last few weeks while the Skins have failed to live up to expectation all season long.

It is hard to believe but after 11 weeks the San Francisco 49ers appear as though they will be forced to battle for a Wild Card position – not the NFC West crown that many thought they would capture. Offense can be blamed as well as a tough first-place schedule.

Colin Kaepernick has taken a step backward this year – he leads the dead-last ranked passing offense in the league with just 1,802 yards (that’s 180 yards per game on average) and 11 touchdowns on the year – just a 81.8 QB rating and league worst 56.2 % completion percentage but he’s run for another 335 yards and three scores. Kaepernick passed for just 127 yards last time out against a very susceptible Saints defense – not good.

Anquan Boldin leads all receivers with 47 catches for 630 yards and three scores but has been invisible at time this year while Vernon Davis is second on the team with 34 catches for 553 yards and eight touchdowns. The problem with the Niners passing game has been that shutting down the two pass catchers previously mentioned means stopping the 49ers passing game all together.

At least Frank Gore has had a solid season running the ball, accounting for 748 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Gore ran for 107 yards to help San Francisco post a 19-11 victory Nov. 6, 2011, the last time these teams met.

Defensively, the 49ers are one of the best again in the NFL. San Francisco ranks fourth in points allowed, seventh in total yards allowed, 10th in passing yards allowed and 13th in rushing yards allowed per game. Aldon Smith is back and the Niners continue to be a stern text for absolutely every team they face.

The Washington Redskins are still technically alive in the NFC East but their recent play has them looking more like a pretender rather than a contender. Robert Griffin has been a disappointment and the defense has been unable to stop anybody.

Griffin III has definitely takes a step backward this season, passing for 2,714 yards and 14 touchdowns with a below average 83.6 QB rating on the year while rushing for 345 yards and zero TDs which is the biggest difference in his post knee-surgery play. Pierre Garcon leads all receivers with 67 catches for 871 yards and three touchdowns on the year and Tight End Jordan Reed has burst onto the scene. But the passing game is struggling despite and Griffin is the one taking most of the heat.

Alfred Morris is having a solid second season in the league, rushing for 918 yards and five touchdowns on 5.1 yards per carry. Washington’ running game ranks first in the NFL at 155.2.

The Redskins defense is 30th in points allowed and 28th in total yards allowed per game. They have been a glaring weakness – one that Kaepernick and crew should be able to take advantage of Monday.

Monday Night Football Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:

• SF are 21-5 ATS in their last 26 Mon. games.
• Over is 9-3 in SF last 12 games on grass.
• Over is 6-2 in SF last 8 road games.
• WAS are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 vs. NFC.
• WAS are 7-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
• WAS are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall.

The San Francisco 49ers are still considered among the elite in the NFL while the same cannot be said for the Redskins. The Niners should be able to score at will Monday while the same definitely cannot be said for the Skins.

The offenses are about equal leaving the determining factor in this game the defenses. In that case it isn’t even close!

Pick: San Francisco 49ers -5
