While it may be the first game of the preseason, these two teams must take this one seriously with the news they both got during the offseason.

Houston

The loss of Arian Foster is a big one for the Texans. Alfred Blue will be stepping into Foster’s shoes again this season after a solid performance filling in for the franchise running back last season.

There are three candidates battling it out to climb the depth chart at running back: Jonathan Grimes, Chris Polk and rookie Kenny Hilliard.

The quarterback race is going to be a good competition to watch. While the job seems to be Brian Hoyer’s to lose, Ryan Mallett and Tom Savage are doing their part to make the decision as tough as possible, with Mallett expected to heavily compete for the starting job.

There are lots of position battles that are going to be competitive. With wide receiver Andre Johnson now playing for the enemy in Indianapolis, DeAndre Hopkins is looking to fight off the other receivers to take the WR1 slot on the depth chart. On defense, lots of eyes will be on MLB Bernardrick McKinney, a rookie out of Mississippi State.

San Francisco

The bulk of the conversation surrounding any 49ers chat has been who ISN’T on the team any more. In one of the worst offseasons for any team in recent history, San Francisco lost more than 10 key players with many of them retiring.

Retired are MLB Patrick Willis, DE Justin Smith, OT Jonathan Martin, LB Chris Borland and RT Anthony Davis. Gone are WR Michael Crabtree, CB Perrish Cox, LG Mike Iupati, RB Frank Gore, CB Chris Culliver and Punter Andy Lee.

You get the point. The 49ers made lots of moves in this year’s draft to bring as many players as possible to fill these massive gaps in the position groups. The position battles to watch are too many to even list, but there are definitely some players to keep an eye on.

Defensive Tackle Arik Armstead out of the University of Oregon will garner lots of attention after the Niners used their first round choice on him. Linebacker Eli Harold is another one to watch as the linebacker corp lost a lot pieces and Harold fits their style.

Tight End Blake Bell and running back Mike Davis are going to get a lot of attention in the offense. Bell will give Vernon Davis some help as well as position himself as a future starter for the team.

Carlos Hyde did well last season and the team brought in Reggie Bush, but Davis is similar to Gore and could play a factor sooner than later.

NFL Football Betting Trends:

Houston is 3-2 straight up in their last 5 games at home
San Francisco is 2-3 straight up in their last 5 road games
San Francisco is 2-3 ATS in their last 5 road games

4* NFL Betting Pick:  Houston -3

With a brand new coach and team, the Niners will struggle to find consistency anywhere until they get a few games under their belt.

NFL Score Prediction:  Houston 24 – San Francisco 13

Houston will be looking to strengthen positions instead of looking for any man capable of playing like the Niners will be.
